In love with a witch (original title Bewitched ) is an American television series . The series was broadcast by ABC from 1964 to 1972.

action

The plot revolves around the family life of the witch Samantha Stephens and her non-magical husband Darrin . Samantha's mother, Endora, disapproves of her marriage to Darrin , whose name she repeatedly mispronounces. Darrin himself is the typical aspiring American, he works in an advertising agency . His boss, Larry Tate, is a slick, elderly, and opportunistic businessman who immediately lets Darrin down when it comes to money and jobs. In a crisis situation he never has his back on Darrin. Nevertheless, the role is sympathetic and humorous.

Gladys and Abner Kravitz, Darrins and Samantha's neighbors, are an elderly Jewish couple - they are a gossip who likes to spy on Stephens, he a resigned, annoyed pensioner who wants some peace and quiet and thinks his wife is slightly crazy. A running gag is that Gladys overhears a lot of Samantha's magic, but can never convince her husband of these supernatural phenomena.

Other important characters are Samantha's lovable and senile Aunt Clara, who always gets everything wrong, and her uncle Arthur, a friend of puns and bad witches. From season 2, the Stephens daughter, Tabatha, appears, but she is not present in all episodes. She comes after her mother and can also do witches. A son, Adam, is born in Season 6 who hits Darrin as a non-wizard.

In the sixth season, the confused magical maid Esmeralda came in, who, just like Aunt Clara, has problems with her magic powers. The role was introduced after the death of Clara actress Marion Lorne in 1968, so the gap in the role part of a "bumbling" witch was closed.

Elizabeth Montgomery plays a double role in some scenes as the wicked black-haired cousin Serena (from season 2). Her relationship with Darrin is ambivalent and fluctuates between disgust and fascination. Elizabeth Montgomery chose the pseudonym Pandora Spocks for this role - almost identical to the English term " Pandora's Box ".

The main locations are the Stephens house and Darrin's office. You seldom see the family traveling or at other times.

At the end of the confusing turbulence, the episodes usually lead to the couple reconciling with a kiss, in the spirit of classic comedy, but sometimes this expectation is also played with and a surprising ending is developed.

meaning

Unlike other " Fantasy - sitcoms " such. B. Dream of Jeannie has Bewitched their roots rather in the traditional Liebespaar- screwball comedies -Tradition as in the cinema Ernst Lubitsch , George Cukor or Howard Hawks have shaped. The sorcery of the desperate wife Samantha becomes a corrective attempt to undo the absurdity of everyday life - a reversal of the comedy principle . Since the Stephens' biography has developed to a certain extent and thus no stagnant types have been created, the sitcom represents a milestone in television history with all the tradition consciousness - here not only new forms of series and situation comedy were tried out, but taboos were also broken for the first time . For the first time a married couple sleeps together in one bed on the screen, and for the first time a couple's life apart is benevolently demonstrated (Samantha's parents).

synchronization

Due to the different broadcast phases on German television (1970s, 1980s and 1990s), there were three phases of synchronization. 47 episodes of the first two seasons were never dubbed. It was limited to 25 episodes. A total of 86 episodes (26 in b / w, 60 in color) were dubbed for broadcast in the ARD regional program; The Kirch group did not have a further 119 episodes dubbed until the late 1980s. 25 episodes produced in black and white from the first two seasons have not been shown on German television since 1968, not even on pay TV . The German dubbing dispensed with the subtle allusions and complexity of screwball comedy , because the broadcast of Verliebt in einer Hexe in Germany was aimed primarily at children. In addition, in the later dubbed episodes, the original soundtrack was often replaced by a new accompaniment from Fred Strittmatter and Quirin Amper Jr., who had already been used for the German version of " Bewitching Jeannie ". As was common at the time, the laughs were completely eliminated. The fact that the German synchronization differs from the original in many details can already be seen in the transmission of the original title Bewitched (bewitched, enchanted). The later German version even changes the structure of the episodes, which are normally opened by an action opener , i.e. a preparatory scene, and then lead to the title animated film. Then the actual episode begins. In the German versions, the episode usually starts with the cartoon.

In March 2010, seasons 1–8 appeared on DVD, so that the originals (with subtitles) can also be seen in German-speaking countries.
