Dick York

Richard Allen "Dick" York (born September 4, 1928 in Fort Wayne , Indiana , † February 20, 1992 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) was an American film and television actor .

Life

Dick York, the son of a businessman and a seamstress, grew up in Chicago and starred in the radio series That Brewster Boy at the age of 15 . After a few more years with the radio, he turned to theater work in New York, making his debut on Broadway in the later filmed theater plays Tea and Sympathy and Bus Stop . From the mid-1950s he got major roles in film and television. Probably his best-known cinema appearance was that of the accused teacher Bertram Cates , based on the historical person of John Thomas Scopes , in Stanley Kramer's 1960 film drama Who Sows the Wind .

Dick York played his most famous role in the television series In Love with a Witch , in which he played Darrin Stephens , husband of the witch Samantha ( Elizabeth Montgomery ) from the first to the fifth season, from 1964 to 1969 . After the fifth season he had to pass the role on to Dick Sargent because of severe back pain that has plagued York since an accident while filming They Came to Cordura in 1959. These restricted his mobility noticeably, so that he was bedridden for a long time, and he became temporarily addicted to drugs due to the painkillers prescribed for him. After leaving Verliebt a Hexe , he only appeared in front of the camera for three supporting roles in the 1980s. York was heavily involved in the last phase of his life for the needy and the homeless and organized fundraising and aid projects. He founded the Acting for Life organization for the homeless .

He and his wife, Joan, had three daughters and two sons. They lived together in Michigan, where the heavy smoker died on February 20, 1992 at the age of 63 of complications from pulmonary emphysema .
