Elizabeth Victoria Montgomery (born April 15, 1933 in Hollywood , California , † May 18, 1995 in Los Angeles ) was an American film and television actress .

life and career

Elizabeth Montgomery was the daughter of Robert Montgomery and his wife Elizabeth Bryan Allen. She attended the Westlake School for Girls . At 19, she starred in her father's TV program, Robert Montgomery Presents, in the drama Top Secret . Late love was her Broadway debut . At the age of 21 she married the TV director Frederic Cammann , but continued to appear on her father's station and other TV shows.

She made her screen debut in 1955 in The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell alongside Gary Cooper . In 1960 she portrayed Rusty Heller in an episode of The Untouchables and was nominated for her first Emmy . In 1956 she met her second husband, Gig Young . While filming the film Johnny Cool , she met producer / director William Asher , whom she married after divorcing Gig Young. The marriage to Asher gave birth to the children William, Robert and Rebecca. In the television series Bewitched , she played Samantha Stephens, a witch who is married to a mortal. The series ran for eight seasons on ABC and was the highest rated show of its time. It earned the actors and crew five Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations. In 1974 her marriage to Asher was divorced.

In 1973 Montgomery starred with Robert Foxworth in the film Mrs. Sundance . In 1992 she married him. The 1974 film A Case of Rape , which had the highest ratings in TV history, earned her an Emmy nomination. In 1975 she played the lead role in The Legend of Lizzie Borden and was again nominated for an Emmy. In 1976 the remake of Dark Victory was created. During this time, Montgomery was also busy with game shows, where she worked with friends Allen Ludden and Robert Foxworth.

In 1978, The Awakening Land was created , a seven-hour mini - series . Several TV series followed and a return from Bewitched was under discussion. At the side of Foxworth she starred in the TV films Face to Face (1990) and With Murder In Mind (1992). The investigation revealed that the supposed flu was a fatal cancer that Montgomery succumbed to on May 18, 1995 in her Beverly Hills home .

In January 2008, Montgomery was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
