Marion Lorne MacDougall (born August 12, 1883 in West Pittston , Pennsylvania , † May 9, 1968 in New York City ) was an American actress and Emmy Prize winner.

Life

Marion Lorne was born on August 12, 1883 in Pennsylvania to Scottish immigrants and began her career in show business on Broadway in 1905 after studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York . Her career as a stage actress also took her to London , where Lorne ran her own theater, the Whitehall . All of her theater productions during this period were great successes.

After Marion Lorne at the beginning of the 1930s in some short films had helped, she made her debut in 1951 in the film Strangers on a train by Alfred Hitchcock in Hollywood .

After her film debut, Marion Lorne continued her acting career mainly on television. She starred in the role of teacher Mrs. Gurney on the sitcom Mr Peepers in the early 1950s , and in the late 1950s in the role of Myrtle Banford in the NBC-produced television series Sally , alongside Joan Caulfield . Both series earned their Emmy nominations. Lorne had another role on The Garry Moore Show . In the latter television show, she made several guest appearances between 1958 and 1961.

Marion Lorne's best-known role is that of the lovable and senile witch Aunt Clara in the successful series In Love with a Witch . For this role, Lorne was posthumously awarded an Emmy for the first time in 1968 after numerous nominations during her lifetime .

On May 9, 1968, Marion Lorne died of a heart attack in her Manhattan apartment at the age of 84 .

Private

Lorne was married to the playwright Walter Hackett from 1911 until his death in 1944 . The marriage remained childless.
