Alice Ghostley
Alice Margaret Ghostley (born August 14, 1923 in Eve , Missouri , † September 21, 2007 in Studio City , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .
Life
Alice Margaret Ghostley was born at Eve Railway Station, Missouri, where her father was then a telegraph operator. She grew up in Henryetta , Oklahoma . After high school, she studied acting at the University of Oklahoma . She dropped out of college to focus on her theater career. In 1952 she made her debut on Broadway and played there regularly until the mid-1960s. During this time she was nominated twice, in 1963 and 1965, for a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress , which she finally won in 1965.
As a film actress, she made her debut in smaller television roles in the early 1950s. She starred in television series and films before making her screen debut in the 1963 literary film adaptation Who disturbs the Nightingale as Aunt Stephanie Crawford, alongside actors such as Gregory Peck , Mary Badham and Robert Duvall . She later starred in well-known films such as The Graduate , Grease and Still a Strange Couple . She was nominated for an Emmy in 1992 for her portrayal of Bernice Clifton, which she impersonated in the sitcom Man Doesn't Have to Be from 1986 to 1993 .
On September 21, 2007, Ghostley died at the age of 84 from complications from colon cancer and a series of strokes . Ghostley was married to actor Felice Orlandi from 1953 until his death on May 21, 2003 . The marriage remained childless.
