Grease is a 1978 film based on the 1971 musical of the same name . The leading roles are played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John .
action
In the summer of 1959, Danny Zuko, a member of the T-Birds, meets Sandy Olsson, an innocent girl from Australia , on the beach and they fall in love. When autumn comes, Sandy has to go back to Australia. But then Sandy's parents move and she goes to Rydell High School, which Danny also attends. She meets a group of girls, the Pink Ladies, and quickly becomes friends with them. Danny and Sandy tell their respective friends about their acquaintance.
Danny and Sandy are "introduced" to each other by Betty Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Ladies, and decide to relive their romance. Of course, this cannot happen without constant interference from the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies, as well as a rival gang, the Scorpions.
Danny and Sandy go to the school dance competition together. However, the T-Birds manage to separate the two and bring Danny together with his ex-girlfriend Cha-Cha DiGregorio, a pretty salsa dancer . Danny and Cha-Cha win the competition. Sandy leaves the event sadly.
To win Sandy back, Danny asks her if she wants to be "his girl" and offers her a ring. She initially accepts, but feels that he just wants to sleep with her. Finally Sandy gives him the ring back and leaves him. The T-Birds are working on their car for a car race against the Scorpions. Kenickie is ready for the race but he gets a knock in the head from the car door so Danny has to drive the race for him and wins.
At the end of the school year, a new, "wicked" looking Sandy turns up at the graduation fair, dressed in black leather and high heels . She seems determined to loosen up to be with Danny. Meanwhile, Danny has received a jacket from the Rydell High School running club, with which he wants to impress Sandy. After the last musical number in the film, Danny and Sandy fly arm in arm in a roadster into the sky.
synchronization
The film was re-dubbed for re-release in 1998.
occupation
John Travolta, already known in 1977 for the film Saturday Night Fever , was able to consolidate his status as a star with Grease . Olivia Newton-John, previously only known as a country and folk singer and not yet particularly successful commercially in Europe, was able to increase her fame significantly through the film. Originally, Henry Winkler and Susan Dey should have played the leading roles. After Dey's cancellation, Deborah Raffin was scheduled. Then the producer Allan Carr met the Australian singer Olivia Newton-John over dinner at Helen Reddy's house, who he thought was more suitable for the musical side of the film.
Harry Reems should have played the role of coach . Paramount Pictures gave the role to Sid Caesar, however, as protests over Reems' involvement in the porn film Deep Throat are said to have threatened the success of the film. John Travolta's eldest sister Ellen Travolta plays the waitress in the ice cream parlor.
Soundtrack
The theme song for the film was composed by Barry Gibb . By John Farrar come Hopelessly Devoted to You and You're the One That I Want , more titles by Louis St. Louis . The film's soundtrack was a number one album in many countries. In the UK, the two Travolta / Newton-John duets You're The One That I Want and Summer Night became number one hits. The movie's theme song was also a number one single for Frankie Valli . The US ska band Less Than Jake has re-recorded parts of the soundtrack. The eight-track album was released in 1996 and was called Greased .
Trivia
Grease is the English term for "smear" and stands for the pomade that male high school students used to shape their hairstyles in the 1950s. It also refers to the song Greased Lightnin ' that the T-Birds sing.

Box office income and continuation
Worldwide cinema sales reached around 397 million US dollars (of which around 190 million US dollars in the North American region) with a total budget of 6 million US dollars. In 1982 the sequel Grease 2 was published, but could not build on the success of the first film.
