Hair pomade

origin

Pomade has been used since the 18th century, but was considered a cosmetic product by the nobility. The term “pomade” comes from its then common production from apples (ital. Pomo or french. Pomme ).

history

In the Roaring Twenties , pomade first became popular with the Afro-American population because it made it easier to style even frizzy and thick hair. It gives the hair a matt to strong shine. Boxer legend Joe Louis is one of the most famous users of the time.

The silent film star Rudolph Valentino made the pomade known to a wide audience, his shiny hair became his trademark and the epitome of the Latin lover. In the 1930s and 1940s, pomades, hair tonics and aftershave were part of everyday men's grooming.

At the end of the 1950s, the use of pomade reached its peak through the quiff and the so-called “ducktail” or “pompadour” by Elvis Presley and other rock and roll artists.

In Germany, pomade has been almost completely forgotten since the 1950s, only some fans of the 1920s or 1950s, for example the rockabillies or a cappella groups, still use pomade in German-speaking countries. For the general population, it has been equated with grease, lard curls or oily hair since the post-war period, since lard, fat or butter were actually used as a substitute for real pomade out of necessity. The hairdressing cream Brisk is still available .

In English-speaking countries, on the other hand, pomade has a long tradition and is a widespread hair styling and hair care product in these countries, which is usually available from hairdressers or drug stores. Famous branded pomades such as “Sweet Georgia Brown Pomade”, “Murray's Pomade”, “Black & White” or products from the “Imperial DAX” company also come from the USA . DAX in particular is also used by young people, especially from the rap scene.
