aftershave
The aftershave is an aqueous - alcoholic solution that contains fragrances . It can be applied as a so-called preshave before and as a so-called aftershave after shaving the beard on the skin stressed by shaving in order to avoid so-called razor burn .
Preshave products
Preshave products (from pre "before, before, before" and shave "shave") are intended to prepare the skin and whiskers for shaving. In addition to aftershave, there is also shaving powder .
With a dry shave, the whiskers should stick out from the surface of the skin as erect as possible and be stiff and dry. Therefore, preshaves for dry shaving are based on alcoholic solutions, which have a dehydrating and thus stiffening effect. By smoothing the surface of the skin, dehydration leads to an improvement in the lubricity of the dry shaver. In addition to alcohol (mostly ethanol), the preshave products often contain fragrances or essential oils and often refreshing ingredients such as menthol or camphor.
Preshave products for wet shaving remove the sebum from the beard hair before shaving. This allows water to penetrate the hair, it swells up, becomes softer and enables smooth and soft cuts.
Aftershave products
Aftershave products (from after "after, after" and shave "shave") are not only aftershave lotions , but also lotions , gels and balms . Depending on the formulation, they have a neutralizing, astringent , antibacterial , healing and / or moisturizing effect.
The main components of aftershave lotions are water, ethanol (alcohol) and fragrances . Dyes are also occasionally used. Various care substances are used in the cosmetically more demanding aftershave products. Often there are additives made from oak bark , witch hazel , sage and aluminum salts , which have a relaxing and astringent (and thus hemostatic) effect. Menthol and camphor are often added for refreshment, and panthenol , allantoin , azulene and bisabolol are considered to be soothing. Lactic acid , citric acid or tartaric acid help maintain the skin's pH value . The consistency of the aftershave products (clear solutions, gels and light oil-in-water emulsions ) is achieved through the use of various auxiliaries such as solubilizers, emulsifiers , gel formers and lipophilic components.
