Aristau (in local dialect : [ ˈɑɾiʒ̊tˌæʊ̯ ]) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Muri district and is located in the Reuss Valley , on the border with the Canton of Zurich .

geography

Birri

The community consists of three villages on the edge of the original Reuss alluvial plain : Althäuser ( 418  m above sea level ) in the north, Aristau ( 401  m above sea level ) in the middle and Birri ( 388  m above sea level) . ) in the south.

The once strongly meandering Reuss often overflowed its banks and flooded the fields. It was straightened with the last stage of the improvement from 1972 to 1983 and completely delimited by flood protection dams. The artificial Reuss Canal runs along the river. This drains the plain, which has numerous ponds , moats and swamps . Part of the plain is under nature protection .

Taming the free-flowing Reuss was a long-lasting undertaking: a drainage canal along the river was completed in 1861, and the dumping of the plain was completed by 1863. Nevertheless, in the following decades there were repeated dam breaks and floods. Only the second Reuss valley renovation finally solved the problem. In the process, almost 14 km of new dams and around 36 km of drainage channels were built, and the new construction of the Zufikon power plant ensured a backwater and thus a slower flow rate. Immediately to the west of the three villages is the Wagenrain , a wooded ridge that separates the Reuss valley from the Bünztal. In the northwest lies the Murimoos, a plain on the canalised Bünz .

The area of the municipality is 864 hectares , of which 134 hectares are forested and 83 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 475  m above sea level. M. in the riding forest, the deepest at 380  m above sea level. M. on the Reuss. Neighboring communities are Besenbüren and Rottenschwil in the north, Jonen in the east, Ottenbach in the southeast, Merenschwand in the south, Muri in the southwest and Boswil in the west.

history

There is evidence of settlement in the area from the Latène period: a bronze fibula was excavated near the Aristau Chapel . The first written mention of the place comes from the 12th century (1153 Henrico de Arnestowo, Althüsern ; before 1150 [Cop. 14th century] Arestouw , Nokerus de ArestouweArestǒw etiam et Gerüt ). The place name goes back to an Old High German composition * Arnest (es) -ouwa and means "water-near land of Arnest".

In the Middle Ages, the area was under the influence of the Counts of Lenzburg . After their extinction in 1173, the sovereignty passed to the Counts of Kyburg , and in 1264 to the Habsburgs . The most important landlords were the lords of Baar and the Muri monastery . From 1285, the monastery also exercised lower jurisdiction . The Lords of Baar sold their goods to the Lords of Heidegg in 1351 . In Aristau there was a castle tower surrounded by a curtain wall , which was destroyed in 1386 by the Zurich and Lucerne residents after the battle of Sempach .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Althäuser, Aristau and Birri now belonged to the Muri office in the Free Offices , a common rule . The Burgstall , the former castle, became the property of the Muri monastery in 1429. On April 2, 1760, Althäuser burned down almost completely, in addition to four dead, there were also 135 homeless. The reconstruction took three years.

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . The three villages initially belonged to the Muri district in the short-lived canton of Baden , with Althäuser and Werd (now part of Rottenschwil ) as well as Aristau and Birri each forming an agency. After the canton of Aargau was founded in 1803, the villages again belonged to the municipality of Muri. But as early as 1816 Birri, Althäuser and Aristau merged to form a new community. The local civil parishes, which at that time still fulfilled some administrative tasks, only merged in 1912. In 1864 a bridge was built over the Reuss and a new road from Birri to Ottenbach was opened, although the bridge itself is located in the municipality of Merenschwand . In 1942 Aristau broke away from the Muri parish and has since formed an independent parish.

Catholic Church

Until the middle of the 20th century, the inhabitants of the community were mainly active in agriculture, while working from home in the straw and textile industries provided additional income. Peat was extracted in the Reuss plain , especially during World War II . After the population peaked around 1860, it subsequently decreased and then stagnated. Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, increased construction activity has been observed due to the proximity to the cities of Zurich and Zug . Since then the number of inhabitants has increased by more than half.

Attractions

The oldest building in the parish is the Johanneskapelle , built in 1521 , a former branch chapel of the Muri parish, to which Aristau had belonged for centuries. After the founding of the parish Aristau, the parish church of St. Wendelin was built in 1942 . Next to the Johannes chapel is the listed Aristauerhof , built in 1797. An important secular building in old houses is the Landhaus Kapf , which was built in 1687 as the country residence of the abbots of Muri.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In red on a green hill, black-jointed white tower with three battlements, surrounded by two six-pointed white stars." Until 1964, the congregation had the torture column of Christ in the coat of arms , which, however, historically applies to all free offices. Finally, the coat of arms of the Lords of Baar was introduced, albeit with different colors, a curved instead of flat base and two additional stars. Up until 1990 the masonry was jointed twice, but this contradicts the heraldic rules.
