The Johanneskapelle (more precisely: Chapel Johannes Baptista und Evangelista) is a Roman Catholic chapel in Aristau in the canton of Aargau . It is dedicated to John the Baptist , stands directly next to the Aristauerhof and is the oldest preserved building in the community.

This branch chapel once belonged to the parish of Muri and was therefore directly subordinate to the Muri monastery . It was first mentioned in 1360. Abbot Laurentius von Heidegg had it rebuilt in the late Gothic style in 1521 , as evidenced by his coat of arms and that of the abbey on the portal. On July 22nd, the auxiliary bishop of Constance rededicated it. In 1734 the chapel was enlarged, whereupon Prince Abbot Gerold Haimb donated a new altar. In 1769 a Way of the Cross was added and in 1880 the wooden field ceiling was replaced by a plaster ceiling. In 1951 the onion shape of the roof ridge was restored, and major renovations were carried out in 1970/72 and 1986/88.

The chapel consists of a two-bay nave and an equally wide, three-sided closing choir , united by a gable roof . Both long sides have three arched windows each , the corner cuboids are decorated decoratively. A sign with Tuscan columns is attached above the profiled entrance . Inside, the semicircular triumphal arch between the nave and the choir and the altar, a wood carving by Hans Jost Müller, who was inspired by the baroque sculptor Niklaus Geisler , should be mentioned in particular .
