Wagenrain (Canton of Aargau)
Wagenrain

The Wagenrain is an elongated range of hills in the central Swiss plateau . It is located in the southeast of the canton of Aargau and extends over a distance of around 21 km in a north-west-south direction.

location

In the west, the Wagenrain is bounded by the Bünztal , in the east by the Reuss valley . Most of it is forested and some cleared areas are used for agriculture. South of the central section, the otherwise 3 km wide range of hills narrows to a few hundred meters and only shows a significant gradient towards the Reuss valley. To the south of Muri , the Wagenrain unites near Geltwil with the eastern foothills of the Lindenberg .

The level of the Birrfeld near Othmarsingen and the terminal moraine near Wohlenschwil form the northern boundary of the Wagenrain. In this area the range of hills is strongly structured and slopes steeply on three sides. The area is characterized by numerous abandoned quarries , in which Mägenwil Muschelkalk was mined in the past .

The Maiengrün is 589  m above sea level. M. the highest point of the range of hills, on the summit is the Maiengrünturm . About one kilometer southeast of it is Hägglingen , the only larger settlement on the Wagenrain.

geology

Especially in the central section between Wohlen , Bremgarten , Fischbach-Göslikon and Besenbüren , the Wagenrain is a glacial moraine landscape with moors and small dead ponds that are under nature protection . There are also numerous boulders that were left behind by the receding Reuss Glacier at the end of the Würme Ice Age ; the best known are the beggar stone and the Erdmannlistein .

The area is listed in the geomorphological inventory of the canton Aargau as a glacial landscape of national importance.
