history

The land on which today's observation tower stands was once owned by the Muri monastery . A few March stones from that time can still be found in the forest.

The location that dominates the Bünztal and the whole surrounding area has made this ridge the scene of warlike events on several occasions. In the first Villmerger War, several hundred Catholics withdrew here on January 22nd, 1656, and a fight finally took place between the Bernese and Freiämter.

On April 26, 1798, the Freiämtler and Zuger fought victoriously against the French infantry here until they could be effectively supported by cavalry.

In 1892 the later mayor and councilor Johann Huber from Hägglingen acquired various properties and combined them to form the "Hochwacht". In 1913 he built a small wooden observation tower. The tower was 13 meters high. In 1929 he replaced it with today's steel structure. In 1936 the tower was increased by 8 meters to a total height of 35 meters. The restaurant, built in 1930 as a small summer pub, has been continuously enlarged and expanded over the years.

Shortly after the mobilization in 1939, the Hägglingen landmark was blocked by the army and set up as an air observation post. Throughout the war, 12 men were on active duty and monitored the airspace. At that time there were two houses on the Maiengrün. A hut was built on the tower, which was always manned by 3 soldiers and this condition lasted until the end of the war.
