The Zurich Wiedikon station (405 m above sea level. M.) is one of the thirteen SBB rail stations on the territory of the city Zurich and located in the same quarter Wiedikon . Today's Wiedikon station is the only equestrian station in Switzerland.

history

The first railway station Wiedikon was built in 1875 with the opening of the left bank of the Swiss Northeast Railway (NOB) from Zurich main station via Thalwil , Pfäffikon SZ and Ziegelbrücke to Näfels . The station building was on Stationsstrasse in the city district III . The station gained importance in 1892 through the connection line of the Sihltalbahn (SiTB), from the NOB station Wiedikon to the SiTB station Zurich Giesshübel . The Seebahn finally became the Gotthardbahn feeder with the breakthrough of the Zimmerberg in 1897 and the increasing volume of traffic forced the SBB to relocate the Seebahn in the area of the city of Zurich at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Seebahn was lowered and electrified between the apron of the main train station and Wollishofen , giving Wiedikon and Enge new train stations. The relocation was completed in 1927 and the new Wiedikon station opened. The architect was Hermann Herter. The station hall, which is well worth seeing, still shows advertising paintings from the 30s. Since the Seebahn runs from the so-called coal triangle to Wiedikon in an open ditch and disappears in Wiedikon in the new Ulmberg tunnel (848 m) to Enge, the Wiedikon station was built as a riding station on the tunnel portals. The single-lane connection line to Giesshübel was also laid in a tunnel.

Track systems and operation

The station has three tracks and two platforms. Track 1 is on platform I and tracks 2 and 3 on platform II. Tracks 1 and 2 have a shared tunnel portal under the station building. Track 3 has its own tunnel portal. Behind this there is a lane change point for the track change to track 2. Then track 3 leads into the Manessetunnel , which is part of the single-lane connection line to Giesshübel.

Trains traveling out of or in the direction of the left bank of the Zürichseebahn can use tracks 1 to 3 as desired. Today, as a rule, only tracks 1 and 2 are used as scheduled. Trains in the direction of Giesshübel must, however, be routed via platform 3, as there is no connection between platforms 1 and 2 in the Manessetunnel.

Zurich S-Bahn

Since the introduction of the Zurich S-Bahn , Zurich Wiedikon station has been served practically exclusively by S-Bahn trains.

The S 2 only runs every hour from 9:00 p.m.
