List of train stations in Switzerland |
The Zurich Wipkingen station, which opened in 1932, is located on one of the oldest railway lines in Switzerland, the Zurich - Oerlikon railway line opened in 1856 by the Swiss Northeastern Railway (NOB) . The double-lane line has belonged to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) since 1902 , the station - technically a stop - is now one of thirteen SBB stations in the city of Zurich.
Location and route
The station consists only of a covered platform between the two tracks. This is accessible via two underpasses. Next to one of the underpasses is the old station building, which forms an ensemble with the neighboring Nordbrücke restaurant.
The route, which used to come over a relatively steep dam in the location of today's Röntgenstrasse and later via the less steep Aussersihler Viaduct from Zurich main station , divided the future Zurich Wipkingen district in front of the station only through the Limmat Bridge and a dam adjoining the bridge. After the train station, it divided the village by an ever-deepening aisle to the Wipkingertunnel in the direction of Zurich Oerlikon train station . To the north of the train station, the north bridge established the connection across the tracks between Nordstrasse coming from Höngg and Rotbuchstrasse coming from Unterstrass . Since a large part of the aisle north of the station was covered and built over in the second half of the 20th century and the Wipkingertunnel was extended to the north bridge, the latter has served as the tunnel's south portal.
Subsequent establishment
When the line was opened in 1856, the Nordostbahn decided not to build a train station in Wipkingen because the community at the time could not afford to develop and construct a building. In addition, there was a risk that passengers and train drivers would suffocate in the Wipkingertunnel immediately following , as the approaching trains produce a lot of smoke.
It was only with the electrification and long after the incorporation of Wipkingen in 1932 that Emil Schlaginhaufen had its own station in the neoclassical style.
The Wipkingen train station was inaugurated on October 2, 1932. 17 trains stopped here a day and they were well filled from the start. In the first ten days, the station manager sold over 300 route subscriptions at the counter. Six years later, the Wipkingen station counter was number three of the 700 SBB train stations in the country in terms of route subscriptions sold, behind Zurich main station and Winterthur.
Use today
The station building was empty for a long time during the SBB era, but has housed a ticket office again since the late 1990s. This is operated by a travel agency that is independent of SBB.
Despite the fact that the dilapidated ensemble is still alive, the administrative court of the Canton of Zurich ruled that the buildings were not protected objects of municipal importance. Demolition was imminent and a high-rise was to be built in place of the station building and the adjacent Nordbrücke restaurant . Since the restaurant has been sold in the meantime, the skyscraper is no longer up for discussion.
Zurich S-Bahn
Since June 15, 2014 and the opening of the Weinberg tunnel, Zurich Wipkingen station has only served the S 24 Thayngen - Schaffhausen / Weinfelden - Winterthur - Zurich Airport - Zurich HB - Thalwil - Horgen Oberdorf - Zug line.
