The electric locomotive of the series E 344 , from 1968 series 183 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn , was a two-frequency locomotive that was equipped for cross-border traffic to France and Luxembourg for two different contact line voltages and frequencies.

history

The early decades of the Bundesbahn were marked by the accelerated electrification of the rail network, which also reached Saarland in the early 1960s . Even then, cross-border rail traffic began to take shape, but due to the different overhead line voltages in France and the Benelux countries, it required time-consuming and labor-intensive locomotive changes in the border stations. For this reason, the Federal Railroad awarded contracts to AEG , BBC and Siemens / SSW in 1957 to develop the electrical part for a locomotive that could draw its traction current from the German, northern France and Luxembourg traction systems . In 1960, the E 320 01, 11 and 21 locomotives were supplied by the three large electronics companies with equipment for the French AC system and were mainly used on the Saarbrücken – Forbach line. In 1968 they were redrawn as class 182.

In 1962, AEG completed the E 344 01 (later called 183 001) as a further test locomotive. It differed significantly from the vehicles of the E 320 series. The locomotive body was built on the basis of the E 41 in the Munich-Freimann AW , the bogies and the bridge frame came from the former Höllentalbahn locomotive E 244 21 and the traction motors from the E 244 22 The buffer beams on the bogies were retained, which gave the machine an unmistakable appearance. The locomotive was taken out of service after just seven years.
