history

The first train station in Enge was built in 1875, with the opening of the left bank of the Swiss Northeast Railway (NOB) from Zurich main station via Thalwil , Pfäffikon SZ and Ziegelbrücke to Näfels . The station building was on Tunnelstrasse in what was then Stadtkreis II. The Seebahn became a Gotthardbahn feeder in 1897 with the breakthrough of the Zimmerberg, and the increasing volume of traffic at the beginning of the 20th century forced SBB to relocate the Seebahn in the area of the city of Zurich.

The Seebahn was lowered and electrified between the apron of the main train station and Wollishofen , so that the Wiedikon and Enge quarters received new train stations. The relocation was completed in 1927 and the new Enge station opened. The Seebahn reaches Enge station from Wiedikon through the new Ulmberg tunnel (848 meters long) and disappears in the Enge tunnel (903 meters) to Wollishofen. Between the new station building and the Ulmberg tunnel, Bederstrasse crosses the station area on a bridge; Due to its poor condition, the Beder Bridge has only been accessible for vehicles up to 3.5 tons since February 11, 2019, with the exception of trams, and is to be replaced in stages from 2020. The double-lane Seebahn, on which the express trains to Gotthard and Graubünden used to run, runs through the station. International passenger trains also stopped at Enge station, most recently night trains that did not serve the terminus at Zurich HB . After the express train stops were no longer available, the third track was removed in the 1990s, and the platform edges were extended into the tunnel. The former track between the island platform and the western retaining wall was filled in. In 2007, stairs from the platforms and a lift from the former island platform to Bederstrasse were built so that it is also accessible for wheelchair users.

Once upon a time - analogous to the Wiedikon train station - a third track should have led to the Zurich Giesshübel train station . For this, however, another tunnel would have been necessary, which was never built.

Station building

The Enge train station building was built from Ticino granite between 1925 and 1927 , which is why the square in front of it is called Tessinerplatz . The architects were the brothers Otto and Werner Pfister , who used Stuttgart Central Station as a model for the axially symmetrical building.

After the operation of the lake tram on the left bank had been automated, the end of the 1990s began to clear the reception building and put it into new use. Among other things, the premises of the old, local signal box disappeared, as did the ticket counters, the baggage counters and the storage rooms that the station had for lack of a goods shed. Traces of the former facilities on the ground floor can still be found everywhere, such as the former counters, which are now used as take-away counters, or the glazed front of the signal box room on platform 1, which is a showcase that points to the major distributor inside the building .

Since the renovation work was completed, shops and restaurants have dominated the ground floor. The classic function of the reception building is only marginally evident. The SBB itself now only operates an SBB travel agency in the train station , which acts as a serviced ticket counter. The Enge station was upgraded from 2006 as part of the SBB project “More station”.

Zurich S-Bahn

Since the introduction of the Zurich S-Bahn , Zurich Enge station has been served practically exclusively by S-Bahn trains.

The S 2 only runs every hour from 9:00 p.m.

The Zimmerberg Base Tunnel (first stage) and the first stage of Bahn 2000 have largely withdrawn InterRegio traffic from the station; Only on weekdays during rush hour, a few IRs operate in the load direction via Enge instead of through the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel.
