The Thalwil train station is a rail transportation hub in Thalwil in the Swiss canton of Zurich . It is operated by the SBB and is served by them both with long-distance trains to Zurich, Lucerne and Graubünden, as well as with a total of four day and one night lines of the Zurich S-Bahn .

Location and architecture

The station was opened by the Nordostbahn in connection with the construction of the Zurichseebahn on the left bank on September 20, 1875. In the course of the construction of the Thalwil – Arth-Goldau railway line , the station was expanded into a branching station in 1897.

The reception building was rebuilt in 1963 according to plans by Max Vogt . While the ground floor houses the service rooms, there are two service apartments on the upper floor. In the case of these company apartments, it was important to ensure that the sun and the train noise come from the same side. That is why each apartment was arranged in an L-shape around its own roof terrace. The roof terraces were integrated into the building with a concrete frame and serve as a buffer zone against railway noise.

The goods shed was replaced in 1973 by a new building designed by Max Vogt. This originally had an external cladding made of pre-rusted COR-TEN steel on the upper floor . This cladding was later replaced by one made of wood.

Since it is located on a slope, the station has both underpasses and overpasses. It has one side and two middle platforms.

Disengagement and integration of rail traffic

There is an overpass at the entrance from the direction of Chur / Zug. The line from Zug descends from the direction of Oberrieden Dorf to the level of the Zürichseebahn, while the line from Ziegelbrücke does not lose its level. In front of the train station, the Seebahn is split up, the lane towards Zurich crosses under the line from Zug and joins it from the left, while the lane from Zurich joins on the right. Thanks to this overpass, the sea-side central platform can be served by trains from Zurich, the mountain-side by trains to Zurich. At the exit towards Zurich is one of the big bottlenecks in Switzerland: the Zimmerberg base tunnel - although it had greatly relieved the lake line and allowed it to use another S-Bahn line - branches off to the left. However, the long-distance trains from Zurich initially cross the lake line. In addition, the short section from the tunnel junction to the train station is two-lane instead of four.

investment

The station has a total of 8 through tracks, with track 1 being embedded in the main platform for track 2. Furthermore, there are still some stump and sidings. In addition to track 2, platforms also include tracks 3 and 4 or 5 and 6 connected to the two central platforms. At central platform 5/6, the trains stop in the direction of Zurich, and at central platform 3/4 in the opposite direction. The central platforms themselves are also divided. The trains on the Zurich – Pfäffikon SZ (–Chur) route stop at tracks 3 and 6, while those on the Zurich – Zug route stop at tracks 4 and 5. Despite the existing platform, track 2 is not used for regular passenger trains; like tracks 7 and 8 without a platform, it is used as a passing track.

traffic

Not all passenger trains stop at this station. The ICN / EC in the direction of Ticino usually do not stop at the train station. The S25 (former Glarus sprinter) and the IC (Basel-Chur) drive through. The Railjet Zurich-Vienna- (Budapest) does not stop in Thalwil.
