history

The name Lachen comes from the Old High German lahha "Lache, Sumpf" and refers to the marshy bank on the Obersee, on which Lachen lies. The earlier derivation from the Latin ad lacum "at the lake" is rejected today. The place was first attested in 1217 as de Lachun "von Lachen".

The pool, which lies in a natural bay, was of great importance for market trade early on.

The Lachner primary school teacher Marzell Stählin wrote many poems about the community of Lachen, which were published in 1985 in the book "Mys Dorf am Sey".

Attractions

  • Holy Cross Catholic Parish Church. It was built between 1707 and 1711 by Peter Thumb , together with his brother Gabriel. The plans and the collaboration are attributed to the Hermit monastery architect Brother Caspar Moosbrugger (1656–1723). In the Einsiedler Stiftsarchiv there are still five unused plans by Moosbrugger for the Lachner parish church. The wall pillar church with double tower facade is the first work of Thumb, who was 26 when the contract was signed. He is the son-in-law of master builder Franz Beer von Bleichten , through whose mediation he received the order, and from whose parish church St. Martin in Tannheim (Württemberg) he took up suggestions. The decisive role model was the pilgrimage church Ellwangen-Schönenberg (Baden-Württemberg), which his father Michael Thumb built in 1681–1683.
