Josef Marius Beul (born October 7, 1849 in Lachen SZ ; † May 29, 1914 in Zurich ) was a Swiss decorative and art painter.

Josef Marius Beul grew up as the son of master plumber Johann Anton Beul (1811–1873) on Zürcherstrasse in Lachen. He received his first drawing lessons at the district school from the painter Georg Anton Gangyner (1807–1876). Beul first learned the profession of decorative painter in Wädenswil and continued his education in Paris and Munich. Work and study trips took him to Italy, Vienna, Budapest and the Middle East. In Bethlehem he worked for several years as an illustrator for European magazines.

After his return he worked with the Bernese decorative painter Gerandi. In 1877 Beul married Fridoline Diethelm (1848–1913), the daughter of the respected banker and judge Josef Anton Diethelm (1809–1877).

In 1888 Beul settled in Zurich, where he became a respected church painter. Among other things, he painted in the churches of Obersaxen , Lachen, Rorschach , Rapperswil SG , Mels and Reichenburg .

In 1895 he had an apartment building built in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace with a studio at Signaustrasse 9 in Riesbach in Zurich . He now mainly dealt with decorations of secular buildings and at times let over 30 painters work for himself. He also continued to work as a church painter as well as a portraitist and painter of still lifes and landscapes. As a portraitist, he mainly painted people from friends and family.

The Beul-Diethelm couple had four children who reached adulthood; two sons died aged four and thirteen. Son Hermann (1878–1918) also became a painter, who also portrayed his sisters Hedwig (1879–1961), Frieda (1888–1975) and Bertha Julia (1890–1965), among others. Hermann's son Artur was the well-known song composer Artur Beul .

Marius Beul died of a stroke in Zurich at the age of 64. In Lachen, the Beulweg was named after him.
