Artur Beul was born in Einsiedeln in 1915 and spent his youth there with his mother (Louise Treichler, 1881–1944) and his grandmother. His father Hermann Beul died when Artur was two years old. His grandfather was the painter Marius Beul . After attending the Einsiedeln Abbey School , Beul studied at the University of Freiburg and completed his studies as a secondary school teacher at the University of Zurich. As the war broke out shortly afterwards, the young teacher had to take over a substitute; first in 1940 in Willerzell am Sihlsee.

Because there were hardly any songs for the youth, Beul wrote songs himself with catchy melodies and child-friendly texts. Thus, for example, Übre Gotthard flüged Bräme and Stägeli uf, Stägeli ab . His first song was written a few years earlier: At the age of eighteen he wrote Starli z'Nacht in the sky , which has become one of his most famous songs. When composing, Beul benefited from his musical knowledge that he had previously acquired at the Zurich Conservatory.

One day he got to know the vocal trio Geschwister Schmid (he was briefly engaged to Klärli Schmid), who spent a few days of vacation in Einsiedeln. The young singers who were still in school at the time found his songs just right for them. They suggested to the young Artur Beul that he should give up his teaching profession and go on concert tours with them as composer and accompanist at the piano. The trio Schmid and Artur Beul stayed together for ten years and were extremely successful; around eighty songs were recorded on records. Since Beul worked for various publishers, he also wrote under the pseudonyms Frank Midi and Mac Dormant .

Then the Trio Schmid received an invitation to the USA, which resulted in the separation from their composer. Beul had meanwhile built a house in Zollikon and also worked for other performers such as the duo Martheli Mumenthaler-Vreneli Pfyl , for Vico Torriani , Lys Assia ( plover sing your song ), the Texas duo and Hans Albers ( say what's your name, sweet Little one? ). During this time he met the German Lili Marleen interpreter Lale Andersen , whom he married in 1949. He also composed numerous songs for her, including one of her favorite songs In our garden roses bloom .

When Lale Andersen died in 1972, he moved to the south of France for ten years. In Cannes he painted pictures of the port and Provence and sold them to tourists. After ten years, Beul returned to Switzerland. He soon met his second wife, Pat Gysin (1920–2008), who worked as a designer and announcer for the radio.

In addition to around a thousand songs, Beul composed the Mediterranean suite for orchestra, several marches, a small singing mass and countless instrumental pieces. Around 500 titles were recorded on phonograms. His greatest success was Nach em Rägint Sunne , which was recorded in 1945 by Marthely Mumenthaler and Vrenely Pfyl. In the United States, the song was sung by the Andrews Sisters under the title When a Swiss Boy goes calling to a Swiss Miss in June . Beul had thus achieved the first Swiss hit that achieved international fame. This title was sung by the Pfister siblings , along with a few others .

Artur Beul's memoirs were published as a book on his 80th birthday. It bears the same title as its global success: Sun shines after rain .

Artur Beul died on January 9, 2010, one month after his 94th birthday, in Küsnacht-Itschnach near Zurich. At his request, he was buried on January 14th in his hometown of Lachen .

Zollikon, where Artur Beul lived from 1945 until shortly before his death, dedicated the Artur-Beul-Weg to him in 2012 at the new Oescher schoolhouse .

On Beul's 100th birthday, the musical Stägeli uf, Stägeli ab was performed in the Bernhard Theater in Zurich , in which many of Beul's songs were linked by a framework story. The musical is a production by Erich Vock and Hubert Spiess.
