After em Räge Sunne ('After the rain the sun shines') is the best-known and most successful title by the Swiss composer Artur Beul . It was recorded in 1945 by the yodelling duo Marthely Mumenthaler-Vrenely Pfyl and was the first title by a Swiss composer to become internationally known.

History of origin

Beul wrote the song as early as 1944. He offered it to several interpreters who, however, all declined; The Schmid Trio , for whom Beul mainly wrote, did not want to hear about it either. Finally Marthely Mumenthaler suggested in 1945 that the song could be used as the B-side of the popular and often played "Brunnenhoflied". Maurice Rosengarten, the director of Elite Records and Decca Records in Zurich, also found that you don't have to put another good song on the back of the Brunnenhof song.

The song was registered with SUISA in August 1945 .

Because Artur Beul was unable to play the pianist on the day of the recording, the song was recorded without a piano. Walter Wild played the hand organ, the name of the bassist is unknown. Contrary to expectations, the song immediately became a great success. It also appeared in Italy, Austria, France and the USA; In 1945, 60,000 copies were sold.

Interpretations

In addition to the original version by Mumenthaler / Pfyl, the song was recorded by siblings Pfister and Michael von der Heide , among others . The Swiss dialect band Smashing Potatoes recorded a reggae version.

The text of the English version was written by the American composer and musician Vaughn Horton (1911–1988). Instead of translating the text, he said that a Swiss boy had to learn to yodel in order to be successful with a girl. "Toolie Oolie Doolie (The Yodel Polka)" was sung by numerous English-speaking interpreters, such as Dick Haymes and Joe Turner . Lou Preager played an instrumental version with his orchestra. The version of the Andrews Sisters , which hit the charts in the USA, was the most successful . It is not clear where and how long it stayed there, the information contradicts one another. According to a discography by the Andrews Sisters, the song reached number 3 on the US hit parade in 1948.

Since the musical rights between the USA and Switzerland were not yet regulated in the 1940s, Beul lost a fortune.

According to the original title, the French version is called “Après la pluie le beau temps”; the text was written by Henri Kubnick (1912–1991). Well-known interpreters were Jacques Hélian , Les Sœurs Étienne , Patrice et Mario and Ray Ventura .

Most of the versions of "After Rain Shines Sun" are in German. In addition to Beul's wife Lale Andersen and many others, the opera buffo Adi Appelt, Ilja Glusgal , Will Höhne , Rita Paul and Gerhard Wendland sang the song .

A Swedish interpretation by an unknown singer duo was also recorded.

song

The song is written in four-four time and has a simple structure: A short intro in C major is followed in eight bars by a tango-like A part in C minor, which in the last bar is sung in two parts, twice as long as the B part (chorus) in C major. The end of the chorus is followed by a C part in F major and F minor in four bars, in which the quarter notes rhythmically emphasize the text: "This is so and remains so, this is the eternal course of power". The chorus is sung twice. The intro is then repeated in a short instrumental section, followed by the second stanza.
