Domino as a Glarner Sprinter in the Glarnerland

Glarner Sprinter was the name for the RegioExpress trains (RE) of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), which connected the Glarnerland with Zurich . The trains ran Monday to Friday between Schwanden GL in Glarus and Zurich main station , and on weekends between Linthal GL and Zurich.

The travel time of the trains on weekdays between Zurich and Schwanden in 2010 was 61 minutes with ten stops, on the weekend with the extension to Linthal 82 minutes with 13 stops.

It operated for the last time as RE on June 14, 2014, and the line has been operated every hour as S 25 since June 15, 2014.

history

Since the closure of the old VSB- Weesen – Näfels line in 1918, regional trains have been running via the left bank Seebahn to Ziegelbrücke instead of to Näfels. As a result, there was no longer a direct connection from the Glarnerland to Zurich.

The implementation of the “Glarus Dream” of a direct train connection to Zurich was tackled by the Glarus government, the “Commuter Association” and the SBB as one of the individual projects of the Bahn 2000 concept and implemented with the timetable change on December 12, 2004. The position of the train is largely dictated by the gap in the line that exists due to the two-hour EC connection to Vienna. One reason for the introduction in 2004 was the discontinuation of the transfer stop for IC / EC trains in Ziegelbrücke , which meant that the hourly connection was lost. Because the EC trains were postponed by one hour when the timetable changed on December 12, 2009, the Glarus Sprinter's operating times have also been postponed.

An hourly service was planned, but had to be dropped again due to financial problems in the canton of Glarus and technical problems on the part of the SBB.

The "Glarner Sprinter" is mainly used for commuters who drive from the canton of Glarus to the greater Zurich area. Conversely, the canton of Glarus hopes that weekend tourism will be stimulated by snow sports enthusiasts as well as hikers and mountaineers from the Zurich region, who have a direct train connection to the Glarus valley.

The “Glarner Sprinter” was the only RegioExpress in Switzerland to be served from a “railbar” (minibar) in the morning and in the evening. This service was discontinued in 2006 due to lack of demand.

As part of the fourth partial expansion of the Zurich S-Bahn , the long-awaited hourly service is to be implemented and at the same time the Glarner Sprinter is to stop in Wädenswil and Lachen. At the same time, the Glarner Sprinter becomes the S25 of the Zurich S-Bahn and is served with double-decker rolling stock (mostly DPZ (Re 450), rarely RABe 514).

Rolling stock

Initially, two five-part SBB NPZ compositions consisting of the two RBDe 560  120 ("Netstal") and 560 123 ("Braunwald") served as rolling stock for this line, each running with three modernized I standard cars as intermediate cars and an NPZ control car . The two compositions for the “Glarner Sprinter” were provided with stickers and thus differed externally from the other NPZ.

Two modernized “ NPZ Domino ” with four new low-floor intermediate wagons have been in service as the Glarus Sprinter since June 2009 . The changeover originally planned for the timetable change in December 2008 was delayed due to a delay in delivery of the Inova intermediate cars from Bombardier and a backlog in the modernization of the NPZ railcars and NPZ control cars. The first class is now located in the At control car and in the two AB intermediate cars.

The two "NPZ Domino" (NPZ DO GLS) consist of the following vehicles as permanent six-part compositions:

  • RBDe 94 85 7 560 201–202 (NPZ railcars)
  • AB 50 85 39-43 001–004 (Inova intermediate car with toilet)
  • B 50 85 20-43 001–004 (Inova intermediate car without toilet)
  • At 50 85 19-43 801-802 (NPZ control car)

These vehicles will be normalized again after the switch to S-Bahn vehicles. The vehicles lose their special paint and the AB (WC) are downgraded to B (without WC). The two Ats have not yet been foreseen to convert / downgrade to ABt, they will continue to be used as At for the time being.

Since June 15, 2014, the line has been operated with regular double-decker rolling stock of the Zurich S-Bahn (mostly with DPZ ( Re 450 )), and is no longer referred to as RE , but as S 25 . Already during the time when RABe 514 were regularly used for the RE , and always when one of the two NPZ compositions was not available.

traffic

The train ran every two hours during the day. The train stops at every train station in the Glarus region, but does not stop between Pfäffikon / SZ and Zurich HB. The Glarner Sprinter stops in Zurich HB, Pfäffikon SZ, Lachen, Siebnen-Wangen, Ziegelbrücke , Nieder- and Oberurnen, Näfels-Mollis, Netstal, Glarus, Ennenda, Mitlödi, Schwanden, Linthal Braunwaldbahn (only on weekends), Linthal (only on Weekend).

Since June 15, 2014, the Glarus Sprinter no longer runs in this form, but as the S 25 every hour.
