Ziegelbrücke is a place in the cantons of Glarus and St. Gallen in Switzerland .
Political conditions
Ziegelbrücke is divided into two halves by the Linth Canal , which also forms the canton border. The northeastern part with the SBB train station is in the municipality of Schänis in the canton of St. Gallen and the southwestern part on the other side of the Linth in the canton of Glarus in the village of Niederurnen , formerly an independent political municipality , since January 1, 2011 municipality Glarus North .
traffic
Around 70 people live in the St. Gall area, and their main employer is SBB. The station Ziegelbrücke is a railway junction SBB lines from Zurich to Chur and regional line from Rapperswil to Linthal . In addition, the post bus lines and the Weesen-Amden car company connect the train station with Weesen - Amden , with the communities in Gasterland and with the two localities of Bilten and Niederurnen , both of which are political communities in Glarus Nord.
economy
The actual village is on the Glarus side and consists largely of the Spinnerei - Zwirnerei - Weaving Fritz & Caspar Jenny AG founded in 1833 . This company, with its entire industrial ensemble, is a special case and is listed in the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) as a facility of national importance.
It includes production and warehouses, administration buildings, workshops, an estate, a factory pond and a canal system that reveals the course of the Linth before the correction, a power plant and a factory chimney. The social classes can be seen in the associated residential buildings: the factory owner's villa in the park, the bourgeois house and the double villa for the directors, the double family houses for the foremen and the mighty inn built in 1861 by the architect Hilarius Knobel with the planting areas for the workers.
A global coordination center for the Danish Carlsberg brewery was established on the Jenny site in 2012 and has been in operation with around 200 employees since mid-2013.
The Cantonal Vocational School Glarus is also located in the Glarus part of Ziegelbrücke.
Waters
The mentioned canal system is created at the confluence of the Niederurnen Dorfbach and the Rauti and is fed with water from these. The excess water flows into the Linth Canal.
history
The brick bridge, located at the former confluence of the Linth and the Walensee outflow , Maag , has been an important trading hub since ancient times and a Roman bronze statue of the god Mercurius was found here . The village used to be of great importance as a customs post on the Walenstadt-Zurich waterway.
A brick- covered bridge that gave the place its name is first mentioned in a document in 1532. It stood a few meters below the mouth of the Maag and Linth, roughly at the same point as the current bridge over the Linth Canal.
