An AWA bus leaving the Amden Post stop

The Weesen-Amden (AWA) is a transport company that is responsible for the bus route Ziegelbrücke - Weesen - Amden . In addition, it also carries out tipping and snow removal work. It is an institution under public law and belongs to the local community of Amden. The concession for the route Ziegelbrücke - Weesen - Amden - Arvenbüel is with the owner of the local community, which is a rarity in Switzerland, because the concession is normally owned by the company itself. The line bears the course book number 80.650, whereby as a rule only the line number 650 is written.

history

In 1892, ten years after the road from Weesen to Amden was built, a stagecoach was set up. The first motorized omnibuses were discarded, converted military trucks that the municipality of Amden was able to acquire in 1918. The AWA was founded on July 1, 1919. New vehicles were a Saurer omnibus that served the Weesen Bahnhof - Amden Vorderdorf route twice a day, and a truck that transported materials such as hay, wood, rubble, stones and straw for Amden. In 1922 the opportunity arose to purchase an 8-seater limousine from the commercial vehicle manufacturer Hippolyt Saurer .

In the 1930s, the AWA had to struggle with massive sales problems in freight and passenger transport. With the extension of the Bergpoststrasse from Sell to Arvenbüel , the bus route was also extended to there. In 1961 the AWA bought the first self-propelled snow thrower. Their vehicle fleet consisted mainly of blue Saurer diesel buses, which were identical to yellow Postbuses and contained a three-tone horn. In the 1970s, the continued existence of the car business was jeopardized in the face of further losses in sales. A spin-off of the bus line was negotiated, but not implemented. In the 1980s another series of Saurer buses was procured, this time with destination displays on the front.

From 1999 to 2001 the AWA procured three Mercedes-Benz Integro intercity buses in a silver-gray color, which ended the Saurer era in 2001. The last Swiss bus in operation was a NAW bus that ran until 2008, which has since been replaced by a Setra S415UL with a wheelchair lift. Two other such vehicles also heralded the replacement of the Integro fleet in 2010. In 2017 the last Integro and in 2018 the oldest Setra were replaced by a MAN Lion's Regio each. In addition, a minibus is used to transport students.
