Galgenen is a municipality in the March district in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland . Part of the village of Siebnen also belongs to Galgenen .

coat of arms

The coat of arms was derived from the seal image of the municipality from the 19th century. It depicts Saint Martin with a horse, the patron saint of the Galgen parish church and a kneeling beggar.

Galgenen is between 1272 m and 430 m above sea level. M. at the lower Wägital . The Wägitaler Aa has formed a small river delta here at the exit of the valley towards Lake Zurich .

economy

By exploiting water power, a small local industry settled here as early as the 19th century, which is quite diversified. Furniture manufacturers, textile factories, metal goods, window construction, mechanical workshops and others can be found here.

Galgenen is connected to the agglomeration of Zurich through the motorway connections to the A3 motorway in Lachen SZ .

history

Galgenen is mentioned in 1229, at that time Galgennun and in 1275 as the location of the Church of St. Martin. The origin of the name has not yet been clarified.

In the 14th century, the Fraumünster in Zurich had some property in Galgenen. In 1405 Galgenen came to the Canton of Schwyz .
