Location of the municipality | |
Tuggen is a municipality at the upper end of Lake Zurich in the March district of the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland .
history
According to Walahfrid Strabo , around 610 the Irish missionaries Columban and Gallus came to Tuggen with their companions. They followed the Limmat upstream and reached the place along the shores of Lake Zurich. They seemed to want to settle there to convert the pagan population. But they soon had to flee because Gallus burned the temples and threw the offerings into the lake. Today the community has Saint Gall in its coat of arms. Until around 1550, the Tuggenersee reached right up to the village.

Attractions
The baroque church of St. Ehrhard and Viktor was built in 1733 and 1734. It was consecrated in 1736 but was not consecrated until August 29, 1743. A first Merovingian church was built in the same place in the 7th century. A second church in the Romanesque style followed around 1000 and a third Gothic church in the 14th century. In 1994 the church was renovated and the altar was rededicated.
On the Buechberg there are several ponds, an erratic block and (at the eastern end) a nature trail to bunkers from the time of the Second World War.
