geography
Schübelbach is located near the upper part of Lake Zurich and extends from Chopfenberg at 1,879 m to the Linth . The Schübelbachner Bann , the forest area between Müllerspitz and Stockberg, covers 43% of the municipality's area, it is steep and not very productive. Half of the area is the valley floor in the Linth plain and is used for agriculture. The community of Schübelbach includes the villages of Schübelbach, Buttikon and the eastern, larger part of Siebnen and is located on the Zurich - Chur traffic axis. With around 9125 inhabitants ( Siebnen : 4098, Schübelbach: 2551, Buttikon : 2476), the municipality is one of the largest municipalities in the canton of Schwyz. The municipal area is mainly limited by rivers and streams ( Wägitaler Aa , Trepsenbach , Mühlebach).
economy
The industrial exploitation of the hydropower of the Wägitaler Aa achieved a certain regional importance in the 19th century. The weaving mill built in Siebnen was the place of origin of the Honegger looms. The power plant Wägital AG was founded in 1921 and is protected by the associated dam the village from flooding.
traffic
Schübelbach is well connected to the agglomeration of Zurich thanks to the motorway connections to the A3 motorway in Lachen SZ and Reichenburg , the S-Bahn and the Pfäffikon –Reichenburg bus .
history
In 972, Siebnen was first mentioned in documents from the Einsiedeln monastery . Buttikon is named as Butinchouen in 1045, the Schänis monastery owns large estates in the area. Only in 1184 is the village of Schübelbach in the document of Pope Lucius III. mentioned as Subelnebach . In the middle of the 19th century, Yenish families were naturalized on the basis of the law to combat homelessness . Schübelbach used to be on the Tuggnersee . This lake was firmly connected to Lake Zurich and Lake Walen , but today it is silted up. So it happened that the people of Schübelbach, who previously did not have their own church , had to take the ship to Tuggen to attend church services. Well-known families from the community of Schübelbach are “ Schalch ” and “Bruhin” in the village of Schübelbach and “Ruoss” in the village of Buttikon.
