Siebnen is a village in the March district of the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland and is located at the foot of the Stockberg at about 450 m above sea level. M.

Although Siebnen is a fairly large town with a closed settlement structure, it has neither the status of an independent political municipality, nor is it part of a single municipality. In church terms (since 1927) and with regard to mail delivery, however, Siebnen represents a unit.

history

The first written mention of the village of Siebnen dates from the year 972 AD under the name "Sibineihha". This name is derived from the seven oaks that stood on the banks of the Wägitaler Aa flowing past .

In 1834 Caspar Honegger (1804–1881) von Rüti opened a weaving mill on the right bank of the Wägitaler Aa. From 1842 he produced the first world-famous Honegger looms in the workshop of this weaving mill . The opening of the Zurich-Ziegelbrücke railway line in 1875 opened up new prospects for economic development. The village of Siebnen developed rapidly. Further new factories were built, such as the Hürlimann spinning mill (now the commercial building) on Wägitalstrasse and, in 1896, the Rüttimann furniture factory, which had around 300 employees in its heyday. Industrialization led to an economic upswing and a strong population increase. Kraftwerk Wägital AG was founded in 1921 and the large plants in Wägital and Siebnen were built between 1922 and 1926. This enabled the wild waters of the Aa to be tamed and the devastating floods to be contained.

Political Affiliation

Politically, the village of Siebnen belongs to the three municipalities Galgenen , Schübelbach and Wangen . The borders run right through the town center. Siebnen thus consists of the districts Siebnen-Galgenen, Siebnen-Schübelbach and Siebnen-Wangen. Siebnen-Galgenen is separated from the rest of Siebnen by the Wägitaler Aa.

This constellation leads to creative but correspondingly complicated solutions. The settlement area of Siebnen has its own tripartite, municipal self-government. The matters to be settled in the area are therefore often negotiated as a compromise between the needs of the village of Siebnen as a whole and the decisions of the three communities.

Due to the lack of communal autonomy, problems arise again and again that have to be solved by the three communities together. In terms of infrastructure, the dense network of school buildings and the presence of a central school are particularly worth mentioning. However, the administration of the municipalities often causes difficulties, as there is often uncertainty about who is responsible, especially in the case of construction work.

Population numbers

As of December 31, 2010, the number of inhabitants according to the postal district was 7,104. The boundaries as a locality and the boundaries of the respective postal districts are not the same.

The population is distributed as follows:

Community of Schübelbach, Postkreis Siebnen: 3979 inhabitants

Community of Wangen, Postkreis Siebnen: 1556 inhabitants

Municipality of Galgenen, Postkreis Siebnen: 1569 inhabitants

traffic

Siebnen-Wangen train station

The A3 motorway near Lachen can be reached in a short time via Galgenen . The traffic load in Siebnen is high with around 14,000 vehicles per day. In the center there are also the junctions of the road connections towards Wägital and Wangen as well as the nodes Staldenstrasse and Büelstrasse. The high volume of traffic in connection with the tight space and the branches, especially in the peak hours, leads to considerable traffic obstructions.

There are bus connections in the direction of Pfäffikon SZ, Ziegelbrücke, Wägital, Nuolen and Uznach. Siebnen has a common train station with Wangen . The station acts as a bus hub for the Obermarch region. The station has connections to Zurich, Ziegelbrücke, Linthal and Chur. Especially with the S25 (formerly 'Glarnersprinter') you can reach Zurich in 34 minutes.

school and education

Siebnen offers five kindergartens: one in the Siebnen-Galgenen (Büel schoolhouse), one in the Siebnen-Wangen (Siebnen kindergarten) and three in the Siebnen-Schübelbach (Spielweg double kindergarten, Stockbergschule and Ausserdorf kindergarten). The primary school in the Siebnen-Galgenen district is in the same location as the kindergarten. In Siebnen-Schübelbach there are again three (Stockbergschulhaus 1, Stockbergschulhaus 2 and Schulhausdorf). The municipality of Wangen SZ has concentrated its schools in the village of Wangen itself. Siebnen also houses the high school, where all high school students from all over Obermarch (Siebnen, Wangen, Vorderthal, Innerthal, Nuolen, Schübelbach, Buttikon, Reichenburg and Tuggen) went to school until 2001. The number of pupils then halved with the construction of the Obermarch Center School in Buttikon. Because the school was still overcrowded, it was expanded in 2008/2009. The March Montessori School is also located in Siebnen . The Ausserschwyz canton school with its Pfäffikon SZ and Nuolen locations is available for advanced training at grammar schools .

religion

With the Evangelical and Catholic Church, Siebnen has two religious buildings. The Evangelical Reformed Church on the Wägitaler Aa was inaugurated in 1878 after three years of construction and is owned by the Protestant parish of March, the Roman Catholic Church of the Heart of Jesus, built around 1925 near the largest residential block in the village, is owned by the Siebnen parish.

Culture

Siebnen is known for the "Siebner Märt" held annually in September, which is one of the largest annual markets in the region, and the carnival parades in January and February, in which more than 40 clubs and associations take part. The Röllizunft Siebnen is a member of the Association of Swabian-Alemannic Fools' Guilds (VSAN).
