Phoxinus is a genus from the family of carp fish (Cyprinidae) in the order of the carp-like (Cypriniformes), which occurs in Eurasia and North America.
features
The fish of the genus Phoxinus are small fish with a cylindrical, strong body, pointed gullet teeth and forked caudal fin . Its body is covered by numerous, very small scales, only the belly between the pectoral fins is usually bare. Along the often incomplete sideline there is a series of square to elongated spots that can merge into a band, especially in young animals.
Reproduction
During the spawning season , especially in the males, a conspicuous splendor is formed, which can include black-tinted lower flanks, a pattern of elongated dark spots and a coppery sheen all over the body. The males also develop conspicuous nodules on the head and a swollen, white edge of the gill cover. Gynogenesis occurs in some cases within the genus , the formation of asexual offspring through the activation of the egg cell by foreign sperm .
species
The internal systematics of the genus has not been clearly clarified, molecular biological studies indicate that the genus is paraphyletic . The genus currently includes 21 species.
