Joseph Sedlmayr became the sole owner of the Franziskaner brewery in 1861

Franziskaner was a traditional brewery founded in Munich in 1363 . Today, as Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu GmbH, it belongs to the Spaten-Löwenbräu Group , which in turn belongs to the Belgian Anheuser-Busch InBev Group. Franziskaner only exists as a registered trademark and is brewed by Löwenbräu in Munich.

history

In 1363, the “Bräustatt bey den Franziskanern”, the oldest civil brewery in Munich near the residence , was first mentioned by Seidel Vaterstetter . The name can be traced back to the Franciscan monastery , which was diagonally opposite and whose name the brewery took over.

The Franziskaner brewery was relocated to the Lilienberg in the eastern suburb of Au in 1841 . Joseph Sedlmayr, owner of the Leist brewery, which was probably founded in the 15th century, and son of the spade brewery Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder. Ä., Took part in the Franziskaner brewery in 1858, and in 1861 became the sole owner. Four years later, in 1865, the Leist brewery in Sendlinger Strasse was stopped and only carried out in the Franziskaner brewery in the eastern suburb of Au. In 1872 the amber-colored Oktoberfest beer produced by the Franziskaner Leist brewery , the so-called Ur-Märzen, was served for the first time in the Schottenhamel tent at the Oktoberfest . It was a beer brewed in the Viennese style, which was sunk more strongly than the summer beer.

In 1909 Franziskaner was converted into a family stock company under Gabriel von Sedlmayr . For the first time a friar was used as a landmark. The Franziskaner-Leist brewery and the Spaten brewery, which is also owned by the Sedlmayr family, merged in 1922 to form the joint stock company Gabriel and Joseph Sedlmayr Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG . The aim was to reduce the economic problems in the crisis-ridden post-war period and to jointly use synergies. The Munich artist Ludwig Hohlwein designed the brand image that is still valid today in 1934/1935, it is the portrait of a cellar from the Franciscans .

In 1964 the Spaten-Franziskaner-Brewery brewed wheat beer for the first time , which was marketed as "Spaten Champagner Weissbier". In 1968 the crystal clear wheat beer was renamed "Club-Weisse". In 1974, the Spaten-Franziskaner Brewery launched its wheat beer under the name “Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier”. In 1984, Franziskaner began successfully delivering beyond Bavaria.

In 2003 Franziskaner sold one million hectoliters per brewing year. Despite the generally declining German beer market, Franziskaner was able to consolidate its position as Germany's No. 3 on the wheat beer market. In 2005 the Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu KGaA merged with the international brewing company InBev , which means that the distribution channels can now be used. At the same time, a repositioning took place under the new motto “Connoisseurs appreciate Franziskaner Weissbier”. At the same time, the position of the Franziskaner Weissbier brand was further developed under the motto "Time for something special." The focus of the advertising campaign in print media and on television was the Franciscan as a brand symbol and embodiment of the Bavarian brewing tradition.

The Spaten-Löwenbräu Group has been part of the InBev Group since October 1st, 2004 .

Products

The best-known beer from Franziskaner is the wheat beer, which has been marketed more intensively since the mid-1970s and has grown since then.
