Carl August Hegner

Carl August Hegner (also Karl August Hegner , born February 6, 1880 in Lachen SZ ; † August 23, 1964 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss ophthalmologist and founder of the Swiss Aid Committee for Starving Peoples.

Life

Carl August Hegner attended the Einsiedeln Abbey School and from 1901 studied medicine at the University of Zurich and at the universities in Munich , Kiel and Berlin . With the dissertation Experimental contribution to the question of nerve grafting following a clinical observation of intramediastinal recurrent transection by pistol shot , he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD.

In 1909 he became a private lecturer at the University of Jena and in 1916 he was appointed extraordinary professor of ophthalmology. From 1919 to 1950 he was chief physician at the cantonal eye clinic in Lucerne. He died on August 23, 1964 in Lucerne and was buried in the Friedental cemetery.

After the First World War , Hegner founded the Swiss Aid Committee for Starving Peoples, which fed several thousand needy people with soup kitchens in Innsbruck , Salzburg and Vienna . In Innsbruck alone, up to 4,600 servings were served per day. For this merit he was made honorary citizen of the city of Innsbruck in 1922 and in 1966 Hegnerstrasse in the Reichenau district was named after him.

In 1912 he married Nelly Saurer (1889-1958), a daughter of Adolph Saurer . His son Hansjörg Hegner succeeded him as chief physician at the Lucerne Eye Clinic.
