history
The station was opened on July 1, 1858 as part of the railway line from Lake Constance to Chur . A year later, the route to Murg , Weesen and Ziegelbrücke , opened in two stages on February 15 and July 1, followed , creating a connection via Uznach , Rapperswil (hairpin) and Uster to Zurich. Today's main line via Pfäffikon SZ and Thalwil has only existed since 1875 and was built by another company, so that it was only after 1890 that individual trains Zurich – Chur were run on this route. In 1927/28 the lines leading to Sargans were electrified. On December 15, 1927, electrical operation from Zurich to Buchs began, and from May 11, 1928, the trains to Chur were also electric. To the south of Sargans, the loop to Trübbach on the Rhine valley line, opened in 1983, branches off to the left; it enables freight trains and passenger trains from Zurich to Austria to travel without a hairpin in Sargans. It was put into operation at the same time as the new security system in the station.
On March 18, 2010, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the renovation of the Sargans train station, in which various projects were carried out for around CHF 100 million, including a. an additional platform on track 7, a superstructure in the station area, as well as a new park and ride facility with 260 parking spaces. In addition, a new bus station with 9 retaining edges was built for around 3.3 million francs in the immediate vicinity of the train station.
From December 2013, Sargans received a ring line from St. Gallen, Herisau , Wattwil , Uznach and Ziegelbrücke to Sargans and on via Buchs, St. Margrethen back to St. Gallen (or vice versa) to the St. Gallen S-Bahn . In addition, from December 2013 the Rheintalexpress was given a direct connection in Sargans to the Intercity to Zurich, which significantly reduced the travel time from the St. Gallen Rhine Valley to Zurich.
