The RABe 511 is a four- or six - part double - decker multiple unit of the SBB for the S-Bahn Zurich . The trains, which SBB calls "Regio-Dosto", form the third generation of double-decker trains for the Zurich S-Bahn. The manufacturer Stadler Rail , on the other hand, assigns them to the KISS product family .

Construction and commissioning

The development of the RABe 511 began when the SBB placed the order for the construction of the third generation of double-decker trains for the Zurich S-Bahn on June 27, 2008 with Stadler. The contract comprised the delivery of a total of 50 six-car trains, which should be delivered from 2011.

Compared to previous generations, such as the SBB RABe 514 , they are characterized above all by a higher number of standing places per car, among other things because, due to the longer trains, there are proportionally fewer driver's cabs with them. A width of six inches was also gained by placing the air ducts under the ceiling instead of in the side; the headroom is still two meters, because friction stir-welded extruded aluminum profiles are used as floor panels. The number of seats, on the other hand, has decreased slightly compared to the previous models. Comfort features such as low-floor entrances , vehicle air conditioning and vacuum toilets (two of which are wheelchair accessible) are still available. There are also two multifunctional areas with storage space for strollers, bicycles and the like. The six-part multiple unit consists of two power cars and four intermediate cars. All axles are driven in the power cars.

On April 15, 2010, before the first train was delivered, SBB exercised an option for a further 24 four-car multiple units of the same type. Of the total of 74 units, 13 six-car and 24 four-car trains are to be used on RegioExpress lines, including on the St. Gallen – Chur (from 2014 Wil – Chur), Zurich – Schaffhausen, Basel – Frick – Zurich, Bern – Biel routes and Bern – Olten. The remaining trains are intended for the Zurich S-Bahn. On June 3, 2010, the first train was presented to the public on platform 54 in Zurich's main train station. Since the timetable change in December 2012, 13 four-car trains have been running on the Regio-Express line from Geneva to Vevey / Romont, via Lausanne.

In June 2015, SBB announced that it would be purchasing a further 19 six-car trains for the Zurich S-Bahn. They are intended for the 4th partial expansion of the network. The first train was handed over to SBB in January 2016.

The RABe 511, which will be used in long-distance traffic in the future, will cost around CHF 20 million from 2019 to 2024. upgraded from Regio-Dosto (RVD) to Interregio-Dosto (IRD). Among other things, sockets will be installed at the seats in 2nd class, while the seat divider will be changed from 2 + 2 to 2 + 1 in 1st class using the previous seats with wider armrests and larger side wall tables. The previous 2nd class area on the mezzanine floor on the side of the car with 1st class on the upper and lower deck will be converted into a 1st class area. The six-part RABe 511 015-030 and 036-038 as well as all four-part RABe 511 101-124 will be converted. After the conversion, the converted AB coaches will have 52 instead of 60 seats in 1st class and 30 instead of 42 seats in 2nd class. As a result of the renovation, a total of 20 seats will be lost in the four-car trains and 40 seats in the six-car trains.
