The Klosterberg is a 382.6 m high mountain in the Bavarian Spessart . It is located in the Aschaffenburg district north of Rottenberg .

description

On the summit of the Klosterberg there was once a high medieval castle complex ( Klosterberg Castle , of which parts of a tower wall and a ring wall can still be seen today ). It could be proven that the castle on the Klosterberg was built around the 13th century, before the fortification on the opposite Graefenberg ( Burg Graefenberg ). During an excavation in 1973, ceramic remains were found and parts of the ruins were exposed. The Feldkahler Chapel is located at the western foot of the mountain .

legend

Wall remains of a square tower

The forecast for was in the 14th century on the mountain monastery, a castle of the Knights Templar . On the opposite Graefenberg stood the castle of the gentlemen of Griefenberg, who were friends. The ringing of a bell should ensure mutual help in case of danger. The monastery castle was attacked on a stormy night. The ringing of the bell was in vain, since it was the Griefenbergers themselves who attacked the Templars and killed everyone. The next morning some helpers from Rottenberg hurried to help. Only the old prior was still showing signs of life. With his last breath, he could name the traitors. Archbishop Peter von Aspelt then had the Griefenberg castle destroyed and their masters executed.
