The Burgstall Klosterberg , also called Burg Waldenberg , is an old high-medieval hill castle on the Klosterberg near Rottenberg , a district of the market town of Hösbach in the Aschaffenburg district in Bavaria .
There is no reliable evidence of the original name of the castle, its appearance or the lords of the castle. Excavations in 1973 and most recently under the leadership of the Archaeological Spessart Project in 2013 were able to provide some insights.
Ceramic pieces have been found to show that the castle was built in the middle of the 13th century, before the Gräfenberg Castle opposite . The castle complex was surrounded by a circular wall up to 2 m thick , which enclosed an area of 50 × 30 m. It is believed that the castle was burned down in the course of a conflict between the Counts of Rieneck and Kurmainz in the 1260s. Only in the last third of the 14th century was it inhabited again, but not expanded with new buildings. Finds such as tiled stoves and expensive ceramics and glass suggest wealthy owners. After only a few decades, the use of the castle ceased abruptly for unknown reasons. Large areas of the facility were destroyed and material was removed.
Today two rebuilt remains of the wall can be seen. The wall in the south-east of the complex, however, dates back to the 19th century and was probably built by local researchers from stones found during mining. Another section of the curtain wall with a horseshoe-shaped bastion was reconstructed in 2014.
