The Schanzenkopf is a 343 meter high mountain in the Spessart in the Bavarian district of Aschaffenburg . It belongs to the Hahnenkamm ridge , whose main summit ( 437  m above sea  level ) borders the Schanzenkopf in the northeast.

geography

The wooded mountain lies to the left of the narrow Krebsbach valley in the urban area of Alzenau, east of Wasserlos . The Krebsbach gorge separates the Schanzenkopf from the Hahnenkamm summit , the highest elevation in this area. The Schanzenkopf is not to be confused with the mountain of the same name west of the Teufelsgrund , above the so-called Hessenkurve , which is also located in the Alzenau area.

The Schloßberg vineyard is located on the southwest slope of the Schanzenkopf . The Schanzenkopfstraße in Wasserlos is named after the mountain . The Degen-Weg runs over the Schanzenkopf .

history

Ring wall

On the summit of the Schanzenkopf there is a ring wall , which was most likely built in prehistoric times and used in the Middle Ages . The summit of the mountain drops steeply on three sides, while the southeast side gradually flattens out towards the Elbernhöhe (347 m). The flat surface on the summit has a diameter of about 30 m, around which there is a trench about 8 m wide and 2 m deep. Opinions about the age and importance of the fortification differ:

  • It could be the remains of a prehistoric ring wall, which in this case would have been a defense against the Main Plain .
  • Another possibility is that it is the remainder of a high medieval castle complex , perhaps in the form of a siege castle against the Randenburg or the Forgotten Castle on the other side of the valley .
  • A third possibility relates to the castle of the noble Schelriß von Wasserlos family, believed to be here, whose residence was destroyed in 1405 at the behest of King Ruprecht as a robber's seat.
