The Forgotten Castle was once a hilltop castle in the Bavarian Spessart in today's district of Aschaffenburg . It was located in the valley of the Krebsbach on the right side of the slope between Schanzenkopf and Hahnenkamm, southeast of Alzenau . Today only the castle stables and the ring wall can be seen of the castle .
history
The function of the Forgotten Castle is still unknown. Since the hill, about 200 meters southeast of the Randenburg castle stables , had been completely ignored before it was examined, the ground monument was given the unofficial name Forgotten Castle .
A search excavation brought up ceramic finds that the castle dates to between the 10th and 14th centuries. The complex was first mentioned in 976. The castle probably existed until the end of the 15th century. It existed much longer than the Randenburg on the neighboring hill. The forgotten castle may have been destroyed by acts of war.
The neighboring location to the Randenburg and the ring wall on the Schanzenkopf allow the assumption that an early medieval path could have led through the Krebsbach valley , the protection of which required such a great effort.
The area is designated by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD) as a ground monument (D-6-5920-0005).
