Womburg

The Womburg is an Outbound hilltop castle in the Bavarian Spessart in today Aschaffenburg . It was located on a hillside between Schimborn and canteens back to the district of Krombach .

Surname

The original name "Waneburg" is not, as was initially assumed, derived from the Old High German word "wonen", Low German "wahnen" (to live), but rather from the Old High German noun "Wanna" (tub). Womburg describes a masonry structure in or on a depression in the terrain.

In 1443 the name can be read as "Waneburg" in a document from Thiel's Regesta. The name "Womburg" did not appear for the first time until 1787.

Even today , the name Womburg is often mistakenly used for Mömbris Castle . This is because the saga writers in the 19th century did not know how to locate the true location of the Womburg.

history

As the builder of the Womburg, one can primarily deduce the Count of Rieneck . Fortifications had to be approved by the Archbishop of Mainz since 1220 . Thus the Womburg was probably destroyed, if it was not demolished of its own free will. The castle was 1.5 km from Hauenstein Castle . This proximity may give rise to puzzling over the existence of the two castles at the same time or at different times. Its location on a hill in the Kahltal with an unobstructed view of the Mömbris valley suggests that the noble family wanted to secure their property at the time.
