Emmaus Church

The Emmauskirche is a Protestant church in the Mannheim district of Schönau . It was built between 1952 and 1953 according to the plans of Max Schmechel .

history

The Schönau settlement was laid out according to plan in the 1930s after an unauthorized settlement with emergency housing had emerged in this area after the First World War . Ecclesiastically, the Protestant residents belonged to the Sandhöfer community , which set up a parish vicariate in Schönau with the construction of a community hall in 1938. After the Second World War , it was raised to an independent parish on April 1, 1951. The following year the foundation stone for the church was laid on June 8th. The plans came from the Mannheim architect Max Schmechel , who was also responsible for the neighboring parish hall. On September 6, 1953, the church was consecrated by regional bishop Julius Bender and named after the biblical place Emmaus .

Since the number of parish members grew to over 10,000, a second parish was set up on October 1, 1959 at the Emmauskirche, which was responsible for Schönau-Nord and Blumenau to the north . At the end of the 1960s, the Stephanuskirche was built for them in the north of Schönau . In the course of time, a contrary trend set in and the Protestant Church lost members, so that in 2007 the Emmaus Parish and the Stephanus Parish were merged to form the Evangelical Parish Mannheim-Schönau. Initially, the services took place alternately in the two churches, until the Stephanuskirche was decommissioned in 2011. The cross, the altar Bible, the baptismal font and the sacrament implements were brought to the Emmaus Church.
