Stephanuskirche

The Stephanuskirche was a Protestant church in the Mannheim district of Schönau . It was built between 1965 and 1967 according to plans by Wilhelm Stubbe .

history

Schönau was settled according to plan in the 1930s, after an unauthorized settlement with emergency housing had arisen here after the First World War . The Protestant residents were looked after by the Sandhofer Dreifaltigkeitskirche until a parish vicariate was established in Schönau in 1938 with the construction of a parish hall. After the Second World War , it was raised to an independent parish in 1951 and the Emmaus Church was built shortly afterwards .

Since the number of parish members grew to over 10,000, a second parish was set up on October 1, 1959 at the Emmauskirche, which was responsible for Schönau-Nord and Blumenau to the north . In the following year, the Protestant parish of Mannheim expressed interest to the city administration in a plot of land on Rastenburger Strasse for the new building of a church, rectory, parish hall and kindergarten for the new parish. By 1965, the parish apartment, kindergarten and youth rooms were completed in the first construction phase. In the same year the community named itself after Stephanus . The second construction phase with the Stephanussaal was inaugurated in 1967. The planned third construction phase with the church building was never realized for financial reasons, so that the parish hall was inaugurated on December 26, 1969 as the Stephanuskirche. The bell tower was built in 1993.

In the course of time, the Protestant church lost members, so that in 2007 the Emmaus parish and the Stephanus parish were merged to form the Protestant parish Mannheim-Schönau. Initially, the services took place alternately in the two churches until the Stephanuskirche was decommissioned on January 9, 2011. A new use for the building is still being sought. The cross, the altar Bible, the baptismal font and the sacrament implements were brought to the Emmaus Church.

description

The Stephanuskirche is in the north of Schönau on Rastenburger Straße. The building rises above a pentagonal floor plan. The interior walls are paneled with wood. The 350-seat seating was oriented radially towards the altar. This was simply designed and only adorned with a glass enamel cross by the Offenburg artist Otto Kast .

The free-standing concrete bell tower is 21 meters high. The bell chamber is made of wood and has glass windows. The ringing consists of four bells that were cast by Bachert Heilbronn in 1993 .
