Castle meadows

The Castle Meadows is a former, in the transition from the late Middle Ages to modern times built a hunting lodge in the Lower Franconian meadows in the district of Aschaffenburg in Bavaria . It was built in 1597 under the Elector of Mainz, Wolfgang von Dalberg .

architecture

The Wiesen Castle is a three-storey stone building with different window axes and a steep three-storey gable roof and has an attached stair tower up to half the height of the roof with a baroque dome to the north . The tower has its own direct access from the outside. Next to it is the flight of stairs to the main entrance, which is crowned by a coat of arms . The castle building has another arched entrance to the northeast corner, which probably leads to the original vaulted cellar of the previous buildings.

The strategic location of Wiesen at the intersection of two old and long-distance trade routes ( Birkenhainer Straße , Eselsweg ) may have played a major role in the Kurmainzer's expansion. The process of re-Catholicization in the Spessart and the creation of a fortified point should also have contributed significantly to the decision to expand the castle.

Investigations on the foundation walls as well as stove tile and coin finds from the 12th, 13th and 16th centuries seem to have proven that there were two previous buildings. The Counts of Rieneck probably lived in an elaborately furnished previous building in the 14th and 15th centuries. Today the castle is privately owned and is being restored and expanded by the owner, the Aschaffenburg orthodontist Ingo Gräfling. Of him was for 2002 Award of the district Lower Franconia awarded for the conservation of historic buildings.

The building is a listed building (D-6-71-162-7).

Next to the former castle is the baroque parish church of St. Jakobus , a single-nave hall building from 1724 with three altars and a pulpit from the time it was built. Both buildings on a slight elevation give the place a baroque ensemble.

Art Association

In the empty rooms of the castle since 2012 organized the Heritage Day the Frankfurt art collector Friedrich Gräfling exhibitions with international, both established as well as emerging artists. To this end, he and the art historian Johanna Stemmler founded the Kunstverein Wiesen in 2014 , which has around 50 members.
