John Kearsley Mitchell

John Kearsley Mitchell (born May 12, 1798 in Shepherdstown , Jefferson County , Virginia , † April 4, 1858 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American doctor and writer.

Live and act

After finishing school in his hometown, Mitchell began studying medicine at the Medical College of the University of Pennsylvania . In 1819 he was able to successfully complete his studies and was immediately hired as a ship's doctor at a trading company.

After three long trips to the Far East , Mitchell returned to the United States and opened a practice in Philadelphia. In parallel, he took over a lectureship at the Philadelphia Medical Institute in 1826 . The following year he married Sarah, the daughter of a colleague, and had a son with her: the future writer Silas Weir Mitchell .

In 1833 Mitchell was appointed professor of chemistry at the Franklin Institute . In 1841 he moved to Jefferson Medical College ( Thomas Jefferson University ) in a similar position and held this position until the end of his life.

John Kearsley Mitchell died on April 4, 1858 in Philadelphia and was buried there.
