( Bedriaga , 1882)

The Milos wall lizard ( Podarcis milensis ) counts within the family of Real lizards (Lacertidae) to the genus of wall lizards ( Podarcis ). The species was scientifically described in 1882 by the Russian herpetologist Jacques von Bedriaga .

features

The Milos wall lizard reaches a body length of up to 20 centimeters. The body is built very slim and the flat head is only slightly separated from the neck. The scales are smooth. In the adult stage, the species shows a clear sexual dimorphism . In the females, the youthful drawing with light vertical stripes on a dark background is largely retained. In contrast, the drawing changes completely in adult males. A contrasting pattern of spots is striking. The throat and partly the ventral side are colored intensely black. The ventral side is irregularly lightly spotted. Bright bruises are often found on the armpits and on the lower part of the flanks.

Way of life

The species mainly feeds on ants , beetles and insect larvae. Podarcis milensis reproduces through oviparity (laying eggs). After mating, the female creates a clutch of up to three eggs.

Systematics

Distribution area

The species belongs to the family of the Taurian lizard ( Podarcis taurica ) and is most closely related to the Skyros wall lizard ( Podarcis gaigeae ).

The Reptile Database currently lists three subspecies of the Milos wall lizard:

  • Podarcis milensis adolfjordansi ( Buchholz , 1962) on the largest eastern island of the Ananes
  • Podarcis milensis gerakuniae ( Müller , 1938) on Falkonera and Velopoula
  • Podarcis milensis milensis ( Bedriaga , 1882)

distribution

The range of the Milos wall lizard is relatively small. It is limited in the Aegean to the southwestern Cycladic islands of Milos , Andimilos , Kimolos , Polyegos , Agios Efstathios and the Ananes and in the Myrtoian Sea to Falkonera and Velopoula . All islands are of volcanic origin.

Hazard and protection

The International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN) classifies the population of the Milos wall lizard as endangered.
