Antimilos ( Greek Αντίμηλος ( f. Sg. )) Is an uninhabited Greek island administratively to the municipality of Cyclades -Insel Milos in the region South Aegean part (Περιφέρεια Νότιου Αιγαίου). The name Erimomilos (Ερημόμηλος), which is also in use today , has been documented since the Middle Ages.
location
The island is located in the southern Aegean about 12 km northwest of Milos . Like Methana , Milos, Santorin and Nisyros , Andimilos lies on the Aegean arch and consists of a massif whose slopes drop steeply towards the sea. The coast of the island is rocky, only on the south coast there is a pebble beach. Andimilos was an active volcano until the early Quaternary .
history
According to an interpretation of Homer's Odyssey , it is said to be the island of the sun god Helios , where Odysseus ' companions slaughtered the holy cattle of the sun god.
In the past, the island was also known under the name Ephyra (Έφυρα) or Ephora (Έφορα 'watchtower'), as the sea could be observed over long distances from the highest point.
Settlement in prehistoric times can be assumed based on the remains of walls and arrowheads made of obsidian. Remains of a cistern which is probably of Roman or early Christian origin could also be detected.
nature
The treeless island has a diverse vegetation with the typical representatives of the macchia and phrygana as well as numerous wild herbs.
fauna
The rare Aegean wild goats ( Capra aegagrus pictus ), which are related to the Cretan wild goats , live on Andimilos , as well as a small colony of Mediterranean monk seals on the rocky coast . The Cycladic viper ( Macrophia schweizeri ), one of the most poisonous snakes in Greece, as well as the four- lined snake and the endemic subspecies ( Podarcis milensis schweizeri ) of the Milos wall lizard are the most important representatives of reptiles. Every year Eleonora's falcons visit the island as a breeding ground; more common bird species are bog ducks , coral gulls and red hawks .
natural reserve
Andimilos is part of the Natura 2000 area GR 4220007, Andimilos (Νήσος Αντίμηλος), which is also part of the Important Bird Area GR 152 Western Milos, Antimilos and Polyegos Islands (Δυτική Μήλος, Αντίμηλος και Πογύας).
