The Greek Cyclades -Insel Kimolos ( Greek Κίμωλος ( f. Sg. )) Together with Polyaigos and some uninhabited islands a community within the region South Aegean (Περιφέρεια Νότιου Αιγαίου).
location
Kimolos is located in the southwestern Aegean Sea and is separated from the southwestern neighboring island of Milos by the strait of Pollonia (στενό Πολύνι), which is just over a kilometer narrow . The distance to Sifnos is 12 km to the northeast. The coastline of Kimolos is very rugged, in the immediate vicinity there are numerous small islands and rocks. The largest island in the municipality of Kimolos, Polyegos, is located around 2 km east of the Pyrgi Strait (στενό Πυργί). The maximum length of the almost round island is 8.5 km from southwest to northeast, the maximum width from northwest to southeast almost 7 km. The area is 37.426 km². The highest point on the island is the 397 m high Paleokastro.
Kimolos today
In the southwest are the remains of an old, partially sunken ancient city on the current island of Agios Andreas.
Most of the inhabitants of the very arid island still make a living from fishing and agriculture. In 2007 the highest level of alert was given due to the lack of water. The island was supplied by water ships.
Tourism has gained a foothold on Kimolos, but is practiced almost exclusively within the Greek context. Accommodation shortages exist in July and August. A few years ago, the landing stage for the large ferries from Piraeus was expanded so that the island can be approached quite reliably. The connection to Milos (Apollonia) with a small ferry is often canceled when the sea is rough.
Settlements
The community has 910 inhabitants, who live almost exclusively in the village of Kimolos or Chorio . Not all of the smaller settlements are inhabited all year round.
