The devil catfish ( Bagarius ) are a species of fish from the mountain catfish family (Sisoridae). It comprises four recent species and one fossil species. They occur from the Indus and its tributaries to the Red River in Vietnam and throughout Indochina to Indonesia . They are sometimes caught with nets or fishing rods, but the meat is perishable very quickly.

features

Fel catfish reach body lengths of 25 centimeters for Bagarius bagarius to about two meters for Bagarius yarrelli . Their head is broad and moderately to severely flattened. They have four barbels , of which the nasal ones are very short. The pair on the upper jaw has a stiffened base and a well-developed membrane and extends to the base of the pectoral fins . On the lower jaw, the inner pair sits further forward and is relatively far from the outer pair. In the lower jaw there are two or three rows of numerous, closely spaced conical teeth and one or two rows of significantly larger, widely spaced conical teeth. There are no teeth on the palatine bone . The gill opening is wide and the Branchiostegal membranes are free. The dorsal fin has a strong hard ray and seven soft rays. An adipose fin without a hard ray is present. The pectoral fins have a strong hard ray, only sawn on the back, and nine to fourteen branched soft rays. The pelvic fins have six rays. The anal fin has 13-17 and the caudal fin 17 primary rays. Fel catfish do not have an adhesive device on their stomach.

Systematics

The genus Bagarius includes four recent species as well as a fossil known species. The recent species were all viewed as conspecific for a long time . The genus is placed within the mountain catfish in the subfamily of the Sisorinae .
