Bagarius suchus is a species of fish from the genus of the devil catfish ( Bagarius ) and the family of the mountain catfish (Sisoridae). It occurs in the river systems of the Mekong and Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Thailand ). The species is used economically and sold fresh, but the meat spoils very quickly and can then lead to poisoning.

features

Bagarius suchus reaches a body length of up to 70 centimeters. The head is broad and flattened, with a large, wide mouth and four pairs of barbels , the pair of which have a well-developed membrane on the upper jaw. The back of the head and the predorsal plate are wrinkled and not covered by skin. One sharp ridge runs on the occiput and two ridges on the predorsal plate. The skin on the head and sides of the body has numerous, closely spaced lumps. There are dark bands over the pair of fins, with dark spots in between around the sideline . The adipose fin sits further back than in other Bagarius species, behind it are conspicuous ridges that are formed by the elongated spinous processes.

Way of life

The species inhabits large rivers, mostly near rapids, and feeds primarily on smaller fish.
