Scientific name
Bagarius bagarius
( Hamilton , 1822)

Bagarius bagarius is a species of fish from the genus of the devil catfish ( Bagarius ) and the family of the mountain catfish (Sisoridae). Since all Bagarius species were assigned to Bagarius bagarius up to 1983, it is unclear whether many of the data from older literature really refer to this species. The species is used economically and sold fresh, but the meat spoils very quickly and can then lead to poisoning.

features

Bagarius bagarius is the smallest species of the genus with a body length of up to 25 centimeters. Their heads are broad and flattened, with a large, broad, arched mouth below them and four pairs of barbels , the pair of which have a well-developed membrane on the upper jaw. The head and the predorsal plate do not have a distinct crest. The body is blotchy in color, but does not have numerous points. The dorsal fin has a strong hard ray and six soft rays. The adipose fin starts behind the 13 to 14-rayed anal fin . The pectoral fins start in front of the last ray of the dorsal fin.

Occurrence

The species inhabits rapids and rocky pools in medium-sized and large rivers. It occurs on the Malay Peninsula , in the Salween , Mae Klong , Brahmaputra and Irrawaddy and possibly in the Indus and its tributaries.

Way of life

The species feeds on invertebrates, small fish, frogs, and crustaceans. The spawning season precedes the annual floods.
