Unterstrass is a district of the city of Zurich . The formerly independent municipality Unterstrass was incorporated in 1893 and is today along with Oberstrass the circuit 6 .
Surname
The name is derived from the lower road , first mentioned in 1272 , which led from the old city of Zurich via Kloten to Bülach . Its counterpart, the upper street, gives rise to the name of the Oberstrass quarter.
Churches and cemeteries
There are some parishes and churches in the area of the Unterstrass quarter:
The Evangelical Reformed Church has the following churches:
- The neo-Gothic reformed church , built between 1883 and 1884, is elevated and can be reached via a spacious staircase from Weinbergstrasse. The organ was created by the Metzler company in 1963 .
- The Pauluskirche was built in the years 1932-1934 according to plans by the architects Martin Risch and August Arter. The 34 meter high, open tower houses the heaviest bells in the city of Zurich, weighing 17,556 kg. The Pauluskirche also has glass windows by Augusto Giacometti and an organ by Th. Kuhn from 1934.
- The Matthäuskirche was built in the years 1949-1950 by the architect Max Gomringer. The church is named after the apostle Matthew .
The Roman Catholic Church consists of three parishes with one church each in the area of Unterstrass:
- The Liebfrauenkirche, which was built in the years 1893-1894 as the second Roman Catholic church in the city of Zurich after the Reformation . The architect was August Hardegger (1858–1927), who, at the same time as the Church of Our Lady, also built the Church of the Heart of Jesus in the community of Oerlikon, which at that time was not yet part of Zurich. The Liebfrauenkirche is considered to be the "most important replica of an early Christian basilica on Swiss soil".
- The Brother Klaus church was built by the architect Anton Higi between 1932 and 1933 and is the first parish church in the world to be consecrated to Brother Klaus, who was canonized in 1946 .
- The All Saints Church is located on the border with the Affoltern district. Your parish includes parts of Unterstrass and the Neuaffoltern area. It was built between 1963 and 1964 and is considered to be the first new church in the Diocese of Chur , in which the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council was implemented. In the Church of All Saints there is a fresco by Ferdinand Gehr and an organ built by Bernhardt Edskes in 2009 .
Other churches:
- The Evangelical Lutheran parish was built in the years 1957-1958 the Martin Luther Church at the Kurvenstrasse 39th
- The Whitsun Mission Zurich operates the Buchegg Christian Center at Bucheggplatz, which was built in 1975–1976 .
The Nordheim cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in the city and has the only city-Zurich crematorium that is still in operation. The anatomy grave and the grave site for the very young , in which stillbirths are buried, can also be found here. The small Steinkluppe cemetery, laid out in 1900, is the only Jewish cemetery in the city that no longer has burials; the weathered tombstones are evidence of earlier burial culture in Jewish Zurich .
Irchelpark and University of Zurich
In Unterstrass is the Irchelpark , which is bordered by the Irchel campus of the University of Zurich and the State Archives of the Canton of Zurich . The entire area used to belong to the Strickhof Agricultural School , an "Agricultural School for the Poor" founded in Lindau for the first time in 1818 and supported by the government. From 1826 to 1846 there was a compulsory break, which was ended with the law establishing an agricultural school of February 15, 1847. The school was operated by a decision of the Cantonal Council in 1851. The buildings of this agricultural school have been preserved to the south of the campus to this day, including the main library Irchel, teaching area, of the university.
After the animal hospital had already been laid out on the northern part of the grounds of the agricultural school, a partial relocation of the university, which was bursting at the seams, was discussed in 1961. In 1970 the relocation of the Agricultural School was approved by the people. In 1973 construction work began on the University of Zurich-Irchel, which was inaugurated in 1979. Today, Winterthurerstrasse divides the area almost unnoticed - because it runs below the surface - into the university campus to the east and Irchelpark to the west of the area.
