Districts of the city of Zurich
Zurich's districts are made up of 12 districts , each consisting of one to four of the total of 22 city districts . For statistical purposes, the city quarters that are congruent with the city districts have been subdivided again. Zurich thus consists of 34 statistical quarters and over 200 statistical zones .
history
These districts have their origins in the incorporations of 1893 and 1934, when the area of the city of Zurich was expanded by a total of 19 independent communities. Some of these new districts still had an independent village or neighborhood life, which was further cultivated in the neighborhood associations. These associations still stand up for the interests of the local population today . Also guilds and sections of parties are present in everyday life of the districts and neighborhoods.
Administrative and political division
Circles
The most important subdivision for both administration and the population are the 12 city districts. These are numbered clockwise, with the original Zurich making up district 1 before the incorporation in 1893 and districts 9 to 12 forming a second ring from northwest to northeast.
tasks
In each district there is a responsible for the resident population of the constituency office people registration office , which is responsible among other things for a change of address (and deregistration), official certificates and confirmations and appointment of identity cards.
The population entitled to vote elects a city administrator in each district with regulatory and certification tasks, who also heads the respective debt enforcement office . As a special feature, the City Administration Office of Zurich 5 is responsible for monitoring the Swiss number lottery and raffles in the city of Zurich.
There are six offices of justice of the peace , each of which is responsible for two neighboring districts (districts 1 & 2, 3 & 9, 4 & 5, 6 & 10, 7 & 8, 11 & 12). The respective justice of the peace are also elected by the voting population of the respective districts.
In addition, the city districts form the basis of the constituencies for the municipal and cantonal council elections, with districts 1 & 2, 4 & 5 as well as 7 & 8 being combined into one common constituency to compensate for the differently sized population. The members of the respective electoral offices are elected by the municipal council from the ranks of the population entitled to vote in the respective constituencies.
In addition, the districts are used within the administration for the allocation of areas of responsibility, with further subdivisions being possible. Mentioned as an example are the district architects of the building construction department, who are responsible for building permits.

School circles
The elementary school is divided into 7 school districts, the areas of which have also grown historically, but are only partially based on the city districts. The voting population of the respective school districts elects a president in the main office and the members of the school administration in the secondary office.
Notarial circles
There are also 11 notarial groups in Zurich, which in turn can extend beyond the city limits. The notaries organized by the cantons, who are also elected by the population entitled to vote in the respective area, manage the respective notary, land registry and bankruptcy office.
Other classifications
City quarters
The 22 city quarters - also known as historical or urban quarters - are purely nominal structures with no political significance. However, they are reminiscent of the formerly independent communities and places which were arranged around the historic city of Zurich and which grew together to form the city of Zurich at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries and were politically integrated. Some of these quarters are also divided into former districts. The old town, the districts of Aussersihl, Industrie, Riesbach, Schwamendingen and Wiedikon are congruent with the respective city districts. Two or four areas of the other quarters form the remaining districts.
Parishes
There are 33 Reformed and 23 Roman Catholic parishes in the area of the City of Zurich.
Postcodes
The zip codes of the city of Zurich always begin with 80 ** and refer either to postman districts, PO box offices or large companies with their own zip code (8063 for the Triemli city hospital , 8070 for Credit Suisse , 8090 for the cantonal administration, 8091 for the university hospital Zurich , 8092 and 8093 for ETH Zurich , 8098 for UBS ).
